Walter Wilson Stothers
Walter Wilson Stothers (8 November 1946 – 16 July 2009) was a British mathematician who proved the Stothers-Mason Theorem ( Mason-Stothers theorem) in the early 1980s. He was the third and youngest son of a family doctor in Glasgow and a mother, who herself had graduated in mathematics in 1927. He attended Allan Glen's School, a secondary school in Glasgow that specialised in science education, and where he was Dux of the School in 1964. From 1964 to 1968 he was a student in the Science Faculty of the University of Glasgow graduating with a First Class Honours degree. In September 1968 he married Andrea Watson before beginning further studies at Peterhouse, Cambridge from which he had received a "Jack Scholarship". Under the supervision of Peter Swinnerton-Dyer, Stothers studied for a Ph.D. in Number theory at the University of Cambridge from 1968 to 1971. Allan Glen's School
Allan Glen's School was, for most of its existence, a local authority, selective secondary school for boys in Glasgow, Scotland, charging nominal fees for tuition. It was founded by the Allan Glen's Endowment Scholarship Trust on the death, in 1850, of Allan Glen, a successful Glasgow tradesman and businessman, "to give a good practical education and preparation for trades or businesses, to between forty to fifty boys, the sons of tradesmen or persons in the industrial classes of society". The School was formally established in 1853 and located in the Townhead district of the city, on land that Glen had owned on the corner of North Hanover Street and Cathedral Street. Peterhouse, Cambridge
Peterhouse is the oldest constituent college of the University of Cambridge in England, founded in 1284 by Hugh de Balsham, Bishop of Ely. Today, Peterhouse has 254 undergraduates, 116 full-time graduate students and 54 fellows. Peter Swinnerton-Dyer
Sir Henry Peter Francis Swinnerton-Dyer, 16th Baronet, (2 August 1927 – 26 December 2018) was an English mathematician specialising in number theory at the University of Cambridge. As a mathematician he was best known for his part in the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture relating algebraic properties of elliptic curves to special values of L-functions, which was developed with Bryan Birch during the first half of the 1960s with the help of machine computation, and for his work on the Titan operating system. Biography Swinnerton-Dyer was the son of Sir Leonard Schroeder Swinnerton Dyer, 15th Baronet, and his wife Barbara, daughter of Hereward Brackenbury. Abc Conjecture
The ''abc'' conjecture (also known as the Oesterlé–Masser conjecture) is a conjecture in number theory that arose out of a discussion of Joseph Oesterlé and David Masser in 1985. It is stated in terms of three positive integers ''a'', ''b'' and ''c'' (hence the name) that are relatively prime and satisfy ''a'' + ''b'' = ''c''. The conjecture essentially states that the product of the distinct prime factors of ''abc'' is usually not much smaller than ''c''. A number of famous conjectures and theorems in number theory would follow immediately from the ''abc'' conjecture or its versions. Mathematician Dorian Goldfeld described the ''abc'' conjecture as "The most important unsolved problem in Diophantine analysis". Umberto Zannier
Umberto Zannier (born 25 May 1957, in Spilimbergo, Italy) is an Italian mathematician, specializing in number theory and Diophantine geometry. Education Zannier earned a Laurea degree from University of Pisa and studied at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa with Ph.D. supervised by Enrico Bombieri. Career Zannier was from 1983 to 1987 a researcher at the University of Padua, from 1987 to 1991 an associate professor at the University of Salerno, and from 1991 to 2003 a full professor at the Università IUAV di Venezia. From 2003 to the present he has been a Professor in Geometry at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa. In 2010 he gave the Hermann Weyl Lectures at the Institute for Advanced Study.
