WIBQ (1230 AM, "NewsTalk 1230") is a radio station broadcasting a news/talk format. Licensed to Terre Haute, Indiana, the station serves the Terre Haute area. It first began broadcasting in 1958 under the call sign WMFT. The station is currently owned by Duey E. Wright, through licensee Midwest Communications, Inc. History WIBQ's history combines a now-defunct 1300 AM intellectual unit with a newer license on 1230 kHz. AM 1300 history The Mobley and Ford families, organized as the Citizens Broadcasting Company, received the construction permit for WWVR on 1300 kHz. Before going on air, the call letters changed to WMFT. After several sales within Citizens, the station relaunched as WAAC on May 1, 1963. By 1977, ownership was concentrated in Martha Foulkes, doing business as Marchild, Inc. Foulkes sold WIBQ in 1982 to the Oak Ridge Boys Broadcasting Corporation of Indiana. WBOW was a radio station on 1230 AM in Terre Haute, Indiana, which broadcast between 1927 and 2001. In the early 1990s, the WBOW intellectual unit moved to a new 640 AM facility. 1230 then became WBFX, WZZQ and WBUZ, closing down when its licensee, Contemporary Media, Inc., had all of its licenses cancelled in response to a Federal Communications Commission investigation. Midwest Communications is a Wausau, Wisconsin-based radio broadcasting company. WBOW was a radio station on 640 AM in Terre Haute, Indiana, which broadcast between 1993 and 2001. It was created by the relocation of the intellectual unit of WBOW (1230 AM) to a new license on 640 kHz. The station shut down when its licensee, Contemporary Media, Inc., had all of its licenses cancelled in response to a Federal Communications Commission investigation. History On June 9, 1993, WBOW and its adult standards format moved from 1230 AM to 640, a lower frequency with an improved coverage area. Usually unlike dead air (broadcasting only silence), a station that is dark or silent does not even transmit a carrier signal.
