''Wise Girls'' is a 1929 American pre-Code comedy film directed by E. Mason Hopper and written by Margaret Booth, Elliott Nugent and J. C. Nugent. The film stars Elliott Nugent, Norma Lee, Roland Young, J. C. Nugent and Clara Blandick in her first talkie film. The film was released on September 21, 1929, by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Margaret Booth
Margaret Booth (January 16, 1898 – October 28, 2002) was an American film editor. In a career lasting seven decades, Booth was most associated with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). Born in Los Angeles, Margaret was the younger sister of actor Elmer Booth, who starred in several films for D. W. Griffith. Elmer was killed in a train accident, and Griffith later employed Margaret as a negative cutter. Booth worked with Griffith's studio for several years. She later joined Louis B. Mayer's namesake studio, where she was mentored by film director John M. Stahl. In 1924, Mayer merged his studio with Metro Pictures and Goldwyn Pictures to form Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). Stahl and Booth joined MGM, where she edited several of his films. Stahl later left MGM, while Booth stayed. She was named the studio's first official film editor by Irving Thalberg, MGM's then-production head. Leora Spellman
Leora Spellman (born Leora Theresa Spellmeyer; July 13, 1888 or 1890 – September 4, 1945) was an American vaudeville performer and stage and film actress and the wife of Charles B. Middleton. Born Leora Theresa Spellmeyer in Bonne Terre, Missouri, she began singing on stage as a child, and as a young lady began working in vaudeville where she met and married fellow performer Charles Middleton in 1908. They then teamed up to create a vaudeville act billed as "Middleton and Spellmeyer." Using the stage name Laura Spellman, she worked primarily in live theatre, as did her husband, but in 1920 they made their silent film debut together in "''Wits vs. Wits''." However, she continued working on stage, and appeared in only two more films. Her husband eventually built a very successful career as a character actor in film, notably as " Emperor Ming" in the ''Flash Gordon'' serials. The genre is one of the oldest in American cinema; some of the first silent movies were comedies, as slapstick comedy often relies on visual depictions, without requiring sound. James Donlan
James Donlan (July 23, 1888 – June 7, 1938) was an American actor. Born in San Francisco, California, Donlan appeared in 107 films between 1929 and 1939. He was the father of actress Yolande Donlan. In his early career Donlan was the actor-manager of a theatre company called The Permanent Players. Marion Shilling
Marion Helen Schilling (December 3, 1910 – November 6, 2004) was an American stage and film actress. She was one of the most famous " B" leading ladies of the 1930s. Biography Marion Helen Schilling was born in Denver, Colorado in 1910. Her family moved to St. Louis when she was young. She graduated from Central High School there in 1928. She started her acting career as a stage actress, starring in stage plays such as ''Miss Lulu Betts'' and ''Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch''. While playing in ''Dracula'' on stage with Bela Lugosi, she developed a blood-curdling scream so effective, when she was working in Hollywood, she was asked to dub screams for Constance Bennett and Shilling's idol Pola Negri. In 1929 she received her first screen role in ''Wise Girls''. Shilling had good memories of her director E. Mason Hopper when interviewed in the 90's.
