Winter Bumper
The Winter Bumper is a Listed National Hunt flat race in Great Britain which is open to horses aged four to six years. It is run at Newbury over a distance of about 2 miles and furlong (2 miles and 69 yards, or 3,282 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in February. The first version of the race was established in 1996, and it was given Grade 2 status in 2002. The title Winter Bumper was introduced ahead of the planned running in 2009, but this race was cancelled because of snow. Prior to this it was known by various titles, usually the name of a sponsor appended with "Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race". Since 2018 the race has been sponsored by Betfair with various different titles. The event serves as a trial for the Champion Bumper in March, although no horse has ever achieved victory in both races. In horse racing in the United Kingdom, France and Republic of Ireland, National Hunt racing requires horses to jump fences and ditches. National Hunt racing in the UK is informally known as "jumps" and is divided into two major distinct branches: hurdles and steeplechases. Alongside these there are "bumpers", which are National Hunt flat races. In a hurdles race, the horses jump over obstacles called hurdles; in a steeplechase the horses jump over a variety of obstacles that can include plain fences, water jump or an open ditch. In the UK the biggest National Hunt events of the year are generally considered to be the Grand National and the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Harry Fry (born 18 December 1986) is a British racehorse trainer specialising in National Hunt racing. Fry has trained from stables at Corscombe in Dorset since 2020, having previously been based at Seaborough in Dorset since taking out a trainer's licence in October 2012. Fry has trained 2 winners at the Cheltenham Festival, Unowhatimeanharry and Love Envoi. Prior to this he trained from the same stables but the licence was held by Paul Nicholls. Noel Fehily
Noel Fehily (born 24 December 1975) is a retired Irish professional horse racing jockey. Throughout his professional career, he has enjoyed substantial success including the King George VI Chase and Champion Hurdle, despite enduring significant injuries. Personal life In 2007, Fehily married Natasha Chappell at a wedding ceremony in Gougane Barra, County Cork. He has two brothers Eamonn and Micheal who both have achievements in racing and Gaa. Their father was a Cork farmer. Natasha describes him as having a very calm personality, saying: "If he was any more relaxed he'd be asleep." Barry Geraghty
Barry Geraghty (born 16 September 1979) is a retired Irish jockey. He is the second most successful jockey of all time at the Cheltenham Festival. Geraghty rode his first winner in January 1997 and three years later he became the Irish Champion jump jockey for the first time. His first win in England was the 1998 Midlands Grand National at Uttoxeter on Miss Orchestra for trainer Jessica Harrington. He rode his first Cheltenham winner on the Jessica Harrington-trained Moscow Flyer in the 2002 Arkle Chase. He won the Grand National in 2003 on Monty's Pass. Al Ferof
Al Ferof (30 March 2005) is a retired French-bred British-based National Hunt horse owned by John Hales. He was initially trained by Barry Murphy in wexford for Martin Timothy Murphy. He was then trained by Paul Nicholls and won the 2011 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival before progressing to chasing the following season, where he won several top races including the Paddy Power Gold Cup. He moved to the stable of Dan Skelton in 2015 and won the Peterborough Chase for his new trainer. Al Ferof was retired from racing in October 2016. Michael Fitzgerald (born 10 May 1970) is a retired Irish National Hunt jockey and current television racing pundit. Fitzgerald rode for the majority of his career in Great Britain and less often Ireland. Career as a Jockey Mick Fitzgerald's career lasted for over 15 years. After experience on the Pony racing circuit in Ireland he began riding out for Richard Lister, a local flat trainer in County Wexford, at the age of 16. Nina Carberry (born 19 July 1984) is a retired Irish female National Hunt jockey. She hails from a racing family and is the daughter of jockey Tommy Carberry. Career Carberry got her first Cheltenham Festival win in 2005 on Dabiroun in the Fred Winter Juvenile Novices' Handicap Hurdle. It was the first time in 18 years that a female jockey won a race at the Cheltenham Festival. Hughie Morrison
Hughie Morrison is a British racehorse trainer who specialises in training horses competing in Flat racing. Morrison is the son of James Morrison, 2nd Baron Margadale, and was educated at Eton College. He was advised by the trainer Henry Cecil to see life outside racing before training and initially worked in the pharmaceutical industry and ran a lighting company in Manchester. He began training horses in 1997 having bought a stable at East Ilsley the previous September, after a two-year period as assistant trainer to Paul Cole. His first major success came in National Hunt racing but he has subsequently concentrated on Flat racing. In February 2022, Morrison trained his 1000th winner.
