Wind Power In Indiana
Wind power in Indiana was limited to a few small water-pumping windmills on farms until 2008 with construction of Indiana's first utility-scale wind power facility, Benton County Wind Farm, Goodland (phase I) with a nameplate capacity of 130 megawatt, MW. As of March of 2024, Indiana had a total of 2,743 MW of wind power capacity installed, ranking it 12th among U.S. states. Wind power was responsible for 4.8% of in-state electricity production in 2016. The main utility-scale development up to 2016 has been in the northwest part of the state in Benton County, Indiana, Benton, White County, Indiana, White, and Jasper County, Indiana, Jasper Counties. Wind chill (popularly wind chill factor) is the sensation of cold produced by the wind for a given ambient air temperature on exposed skin as the air motion accelerates the rate of heat transfer from the body to the surrounding atmosphere. Its values are always lower than the air temperature in the range where the formula is valid. When the apparent temperature is higher than the air temperature, the heat index is used instead.
