Willy Peirens
Willy Peirens (born 19 August 1936) is a former Belgian trade union leader. Born in Deinze, Peirens was active in the Catholic Workers' Youth, becoming its national co-ordinator in 1959. In 1968, he transferred to become youth officer at the Confederation of Christian Trade Unions (ACV), then in the early 1970s became the co-ordinator of its regional structure. In 1977, he became secretary of the ACV's Flemish region, and in 1987, the ACV's national president. Deinze
Deinze () is a city and a municipality in the Belgian province of East Flanders. It comprises the city of Deinze, and the towns of Astene, Bachte-Maria-Leerne, Gottem, Grammene, Hansbeke, Landegem, Meigem, Merendree, Nevele, Petegem-aan-de-Leie, , Sint-Martens-Leerne, Vinkt, Vosselare, Wontergem, and Zeveren. On 1 January 2022, Deinze had a population of 44,315. The municipality's total area is , giving a population density of 342 inhabitants per km2. On 1 January 2019, the municipality of Nevele was merged into Deinze. History In 1695, during the Nine Years' War, an English force garrisoned in the town under the command of the Irish general Francis Fergus O’Farrell was forced to surrender to French forces. Confederation Of Christian Trade Unions
The Confederation of Christian Trade Unions (, or ACV; , CSC) is the largest of Belgium's three trade union federations. History The federation was founded in 1904, but can trace its origins to the "Anti-Socialist Cotton Workers' Union" founded in 1886. The organisation took its current name in 1923. Today the ACV/CSC has 22 regional federation and 16 sectoral unions, with a membership of 1.7 million (almost 16% of the total Belgian population). Fascist governments of the 1930s repressed the federation and imprisoned many of its leaders, limiting operations until the end of World War II. Johnny Tan
Juan Cañizares Tan (October 10, 1922–September 8, 2005), known as Johnny Tan, was a Filipino trade union leader. Tan grew up in Manila, and attended the Ateneo de Manila High School. He began working closely with the Catholic priest Walter Hogan, and the two founded the Institute of Social Order in 1946, Tan becoming its secretary. The institute aimed to promote positive relations between workers and management. In 1950, Hogan and Tan decided to form a trade union federation, the Federation of Free Workers (FFW), with Tan becoming its president. It was soon followed by the Federation of Free Farmers. The FFW supported a strike at the University of Santo Tomas, this leading to Hogan being exiled, and Tan becoming the leading figure in the organisation. For their role in organizing unions, Tan and his colleagues were soon tagged as communists. Fernand Kikongi di Mwisa (1 September 1935 – 1 April 2009) was a Congolese trade union leader. Born in Kinshasa, Kikongi was educated at the School of Social Studies in Leuven, before returning to Zaire, where he became the general secretary of the National Union of Congolese Workers, and then president of the Congolese Trade Union Confederation.
