Williams V-Jet II
The Williams V-Jet II was designed and built by Burt Rutan's Scaled Composites for Williams International as a test bed and demonstrator aircraft for Williams' new FJX-1 turbofan engine. Development Williams International had been building small turbofan engines for cruise missile applications since the 1950s, and had successfully entered the general aviation market in the late 1980s with the FJ44 engine. In 1992, NASA initiated a program, Advanced General Aviation Transport Experiments (AGATE) to partner with manufacturers and help develop technologies that would revitalize the sagging general aviation industry. In 1996, Williams joined AGATE's General Aviation Propulsion (GAP) program to develop a fuel-efficient turbofan engine that would be even smaller than the FJ44. The result was the FJX-2 engine, which produced thrust. Oshkosh () is a city in Winnebago County, Wisconsin, United States, and its county seat. The Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) is an international organization of aviation enthusiasts based in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Since its inception, it has grown internationally with over 300,000 members and nearly 1,000 chapters worldwide. It hosts the largest aviation gathering of its kind in the world, EAA AirVenture Oshkosh. History The EAA was founded in 1953 by veteran aviator Paul Poberezny along with other aviation enthusiasts. The Pratt & Whitney Canada PW600 series is a family of small turbofan engines developed by Pratt & Whitney Canada producing between of thrust and powering the Eclipse 500/550, the Cessna Citation Mustang and the Embraer Phenom 100. Development The thrust PW625F demonstrator engine was first run on 31 October 2001. It flew in late 2002. In 2002, the PW610F was selected for the Eclipse 500 twinjet, replacing the EJ22 as Williams was unable to reach sufficient reliability. The thrust engine was certified by Transport Canada on 27 July 2006. The aircraft received a preliminary certification on 27 July 2006 and was first delivered on 31 December 2006. The Eclipse 500 production was halted in October 2008 after 260 were delivered, and 33 of the updated Eclipse 550 were delivered between 2014 and 2017. The Eclipse Aviation Corporation was the Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States–based manufacturer of the Eclipse 500 very light jet (VLJ), and also at one time proposed developing the Eclipse 400 single-engined jet. The company was founded in 1998 by early Microsoft employee and former Symantec CEO Vern Raburn. Due to Raburn's relationship with Microsoft, Bill Gates was a major stakeholder in the Eclipse project. The company was known for helping usher in a new category of VLJs when the Eclipse 500 was first delivered in late 2006. In October 2008, production of the Eclipse 500 was halted due to lack of funding.
