Wetherby Racecourse
Wetherby Racecourse is a racecourse situated near the market town of Wetherby in West Yorkshire, England, located from Leeds city centre. For most of its history the course has hosted only National Hunt racing but staged its first Flat racing fixture on 26 April 2015. Location The Racecourse is located on the B1224 road, B1224 York Road, directly adjacent to the A1(M). It is situated opposite Wetherby (HM Prison). There are new access roads between North and East Wetherby and the A1(M). The racecourse can also be accessed from Walton Road at the rear of the stands. History Horse racing in Wetherby was first took place on Scaur Bank (now officially known as King George V playing fields, although still most commonly referred to as 'Scaur Bank' or 'The Ings'). At Easter 1891 racing moved to a new site situated off York Road. Wetherby
Wetherby ( ) is a market town and civil parishes in England, civil parish in the City of Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It is close to West Yorkshire county's border with North Yorkshire and lies approximately from Leeds city centre, from York and from Harrogate. The town stands on the River Wharfe and, for centuries, it has been a crossing place and staging post on the A1 road (Great Britain), Great North Road midway between London and Edinburgh. Wetherby Bridge, which spans the River Wharfe, is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and a Grade II listed building, listed structure. Filey () is a seaside town and civil parishes in England, civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. It is located between Scarborough, North Yorkshire, Scarborough and Bridlington on Filey Bay. Towton Novices' Chase
The Towton Novices' Chase is a Grade 2 National Hunt steeplechase in Great Britain which is open to horses aged five years or older. It is run at Wetherby over a distance of about 3 miles (3 miles and 45 yards, or 4,869 metres), and during its running there are nineteen fences to be jumped. The race is for novice chasers, and it is scheduled to take place each year in late January or early February. The event is named after the village of Towton, which is located several miles to the south of Wetherby. It was first run in 1996, and the inaugural winner, Mr Mulligan, went on to win the following year's Cheltenham Gold Cup. In April 2023 the British Horseracing Authority announced that the race would be moved to mid-January and run over a reduced distance of two and a half miles. Rowland Meyrick Handicap Chase
The Rowland Meyrick Handicap Chase is a Premier Handicap National Hunt steeplechase in Great Britain which is open to horses aged four years or older. It is run at Wetherby over a distance of about 3 miles (3 miles and 45 yards or 4,869 metres), and during its running there are nineteen fences to be jumped. It is a handicap race, and it is scheduled to take place each year on Boxing Day. The event is named in honour of Rowland Meyrick, who was appointed Clerk of the course at Wetherby in 1920. At this time Meyrick was also a member of the ''Wetherby Race Company'', an organisation which was formed to purchase the lease of the racecourse. The Rowland Meyrick Handicap Chase held Grade 3 status from 2005, though it arguably reached its peak in the 1980s when Forgive 'n Forget and The Thinker both won it in the same season they would win the Cheltenham Gold Cup. The West Yorkshire Hurdle is a Grade 2 National Hunt hurdle race in Great Britain that is open to horses aged four years or older. It is run at Wetherby, West Yorkshire, over a distance of about 3 miles (3 miles and 26 yards, or 4,852 metres), and during its running, there are twelve hurdles to be jumped. The race is scheduled to take place each year in late October or early November. The event was established in 1990, and it was initially contested over 3 miles. Wetherby Mares' Hurdle
The Wetherby Mares' Hurdle is a Listed National Hunt horse race in Great Britain which is open to mares aged four years or older. It is run at Wetherby over a distance of about 2 miles (3,219 metres), and during its running there are nine hurdles to be jumped. The race is scheduled to take place each year in late October or early November. It was first run in 2007 over 2 miles as the Daniel Gath Homes Mares Only Hurdle Race and was won by Annie's Answer. In 2008 the race distance was increased by half a furlong due to track reconfiguration at Wetherby Racecourse and bet365 took over the sponsorship of the race between 2008 and 2011. From 2012 to 2018 OLBG were the race sponsors. It returned to the 2 miles distance from 2015. Bet365 resumed sponsorship from the 2019 running and the race is now titled the bet365 Mares' Hurdle.
