Water Atlas
''Water Atlas'' is an orchestral composition by Sebastian Fagerlund composed between 2017 and 2018. It was co-commissioned by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. The world premiere took place on April 21, 2018 at the NTR Zaterdagmatinee in Concertgebouw, Amsterdam by the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Osmo Vänskä. The Finnish premiere took place in Helsinki on May 16, 2018 by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Hannu Lintu. The UK premiere took place at the Barbican Hall on January 24, 2020 performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Jukka-Pekka Saraste. Sebastian Fagerlund
Sebastian Fagerlund (born 6 December 1972) is a Finnish composer. He is described as “a post-modern impressionist whose sound landscapes can be heard as ecstatic nature images which, however, are always inner images, landscapes of the mind”.Susanna Välimäki: CD booklet BIS-SACD-1707. Echoes of Western culture, Asian musical traditions, and heavy metal have all been detected in his music. His output covers a wide variety of genres, ranging from chamber opera to chamber music and works for solo instruments. The most prominent are his concertos and his works for orchestra. Together with clarinettist Christoffer Sundqvist, Fagerlund is Artistic Director of the RUSK Chamber Music Festival in Jakobstad, Finland in 2013. Barbican Hall
The Barbican Centre is a performing arts centre in the Barbican Estate of the City of London and the largest of its kind in Europe. Jukka-Pekka Saraste (born 22 April 1956) is a Finnish conductor and violinist. Biography Saraste was born in Heinola He was trained as a violinist. He later studied conducting at the Sibelius Academy with Jorma Panula in the same class as Esa-Pekka Salonen and Osmo Vänskä. Before becoming a conductor, Saraste was co-principal second violinist and later an associate to Leif Segerstam, with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra (RSO). In 1983, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Saraste co-founded the Avanti! Chamber Orchestra, which specialises in performances of contemporary music. In 2000, Saraste also founded the Ekenäs Summer Concerts-Festival with the Finnish Chamber Orchestra, and he is currently the artistic advisor to both Festival and Orchestra. Hannu Petteri Lintu (born 13 October 1967) is a Finnish conductor. Biography Lintu was born in Rauma. He studied piano and cello at the Turku Conservatory and at the Sibelius Academy. He also studied conducting with Atso Almila, and later with Jorma Panula and Eri Klas. He took part in conducting master classes with Ilya Musin. Lintu won the Nordic Conducting Competition in 1994 in Bergen. He graduated from the Sibelius Academy in 1996 with honours.
