Washed Ashore
Washed Ashore is a project of the Artula Institute for Art and Environmental Education U.S. 501(c)(3) grassroots non-profit environmental organization that works to bring awareness to the world's growing plastic pollution problem through art. Washed Ashore is a large touring exhibit composed of massive sculptures made up of marine debris collected by volunteers primarily along the southern coast of Oregon. Angela Haseltine Pozzi is the founder and creative director. The mission statement is "To bring awareness to the ocean’s plastic pollution problem and influence consumer habits by creating community built aesthetically powerful art. Angela Haseltine Pozzi
Portland State University Angela Haseltine Pozzi (born 1957) is an American sculptor who uses recycled ocean plastic to create her work. She is also the founder and creative director of Washed Ashore. Her large-scale sculptures include a polar bear, puffin, jellyfish, and an octopus. Early life and education Angela Haseltine Pozzi was born in Portland, Oregon, in 1957. Pozzi was born into an artistic family and spent much of her early life on the shores of the Oregon coast. She attended the University of Utah earning a Bachelor's degree in education in 1984. In 1990, she received her Master's in Education from Portland State University, with an emphasis in Art Education. Career Pozzi was a teacher for 30 years. After the sudden death of her husband in 2002 she turned to the ocean for healing. Plastic Pollution
Plastic pollution is the accumulation of plastic objects and particles (e.g. plastic bottles, bags and microbeads) in the Earth's environment that adversely affects humans, wildlife and their habitat. Plastics that act as pollutants are categorized by size into micro-, meso-, or macro debris. Plastics are inexpensive and durable, making them very adaptable for different uses; as a result, manufacturers choose to use plastic over other materials. However, the chemical structure of most plastics renders them resistant to many natural processes of degradation and as a result they are slow to degrade. Together, these two factors allow large volumes of plastic to enter the environment as mismanaged waste and for it to persist in the ecosystem. An environmental organization is an organization coming out of the conservation or environmental movements that seeks to protect, analyse or monitor the environment against misuse or degradation from human forces. In this sense the environment may refer to the biophysical environment or the natural environment. Oregon
Oregon () is a state in the Pacific Northwest region of the Western United States. Marine Debris
Marine debris, also known as marine litter, is human-created waste that has deliberately or accidentally been released in a sea or ocean. Floating oceanic debris tends to accumulate at the center of gyres and on coastlines, frequently washing aground, when it is known as ''beach litter'' or tidewrack. Deliberate disposal of wastes at sea is called ''ocean dumping''. Naturally occurring debris, such as driftwood and drift seeds, are also present. With the increasing use of plastic, human influence has become an issue as many types of (petrochemical) plastics do not biodegrade quickly, as would natural or organic materials. The largest single type of plastic pollution (~10 %) and majority of large plastic in the oceans is discarded and lost nets from the fishing industry. SeaWorld
SeaWorld is an American theme park chain with headquarters in Orlando, Florida. It is a proprietor of marine mammal parks, oceanariums, animal theme parks, and rehabilitation centers owned by SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment (one park will be owned and operated by Miral under a license). The parks feature orcas, sea lion, and dolphin shows and zoological displays featuring various other marine animals. The Marine Mammal Center
The Marine Mammal Center (TMMC) is a private, non-profit U.S. organization that was established in 1975 for the purpose of rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing marine mammals who are injured, ill or abandoned. It was founded in Sausalito, California, by Lloyd Smalley, Pat Arrigoni and Paul Maxwell. Since 1975, TMMC has rescued over 24,000 marine mammals. It also serves as a center for environmental research and education regarding marine mammals, namely cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises), pinnipeds (seals, fur seals, walruses and sea lions), otters and sirenians (manatees and dugongs). Newport, Oregon
Newport is a city in Lincoln County, Oregon, United States. It was incorporated in 1882, though the name dates back to the establishment of a post office in 1868. Newport was named for Newport, Rhode Island. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 9,989, an increase of nearly 5% over its 2000 population; as of 2019, it had an estimated population of 10,853.
