Walter Brecht
Walter Brecht (20 June 1900 – 27 September 1986) was a German scientist and longtime lecturer at the Institut für Papierfabrikation in the Technische Universität Darmstadt. He died in Darmstadt. Life Early life He was born in Augsburg to Berthold Friedrich Brecht and Wilhelmine Friederike Sophie (née Brezing, 1871–1920), their second son after the future playwright and poet Bertholt Brecht, Bertholt. Whilst Sophie was from a pietism, Pietist family, Berthold Friedrich was a Roman Catholic from Achern in the Black Forest, becoming a clerk at Augsburg's Haindl’sche Papierfabriken, rising to manager and then in 1914 its director. This allowed the Brecht family to finally move into one of the factory's 'Stiftungshäuser' or foundation houses. Sophie's father Josef Friedrich Brezing (1842–1922) was an official on the Royal Württemberg State Railways at Roßberg (now known as Wolfegg) on the Herbertingen–Isny line, opened just before Sophie's birth. The Technische Universität Darmstadt (official English name Technical University of Darmstadt, sometimes also referred to as Darmstadt University of Technology), commonly known as TU Darmstadt, is a research university in the city of Darmstadt, Germany. Johann Heinrich Merck
Johann Heinrich Merck (11 April 1741 – 27 June 1791), German author and critic, was born at Darmstadt, a few days after the death of his father, a chemist. Biography Johann Heinrich Merck's parents were pharmacist (1687–1741) and his second wife Elizabeth Catharina Merck, ''née'' Keyser (1706–1786). He studied law at Gießen, and in 1767 was given an appointment in the paymaster's department at Darmstadt, and a year later himself became paymaster. For a number of years he exercised considerable influence upon the literary movement in Germany; he helped to found the ''Frankfurter gelehrte Anzeigen'' in 1772, and was one of the chief contributors to Nicolai's ''Allgemeine Bibliothek''. The Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (, or , BVO) is the highest federal decoration of the Federal Republic of Germany. It may be awarded for any field of endeavor. It was created by the first President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Theodor Heuss, on 7 September 1951. Colloquially, the decorations of the different classes of the Order are also known as the Federal Cross of Merit ().
