Walt Mink
Walt Mink were an American alternative rock power trio from St. Paul, Minnesota. They were formed in 1989 by guitarist-singer-songwriter John Kimbrough, drummer Joey Waronker, and bassist Candice Belanoff. The band released four studio albums over the course of their eight-year career. Allmusic History Early days, 1990–91 John Kimbrough (son of actor Charles Kimbrough) and Joey Waronker (son of music executive Lenny Waronker) had briefly attended high school together in Massachusetts and reconvened at Macalester College, a small liberal arts school in St. Paul, Minnesota. Looking for a bass player to fill out a trio, they were introduced to Candice Belanoff, another Macalester student, who had only been playing for a few months, and Walt Mink was formed in February 1989, named after a beloved psychology professor. Skene! Records was an American DIY punk rock record label founded in Connecticut in 1988 by Jeff Spiegel, then later based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. An early album release was ''Better Yet Connecticut Hardcore'', featuring bands such as Bug Gulp, Fallback, Freedom of Choice, Forced Reality and Scooter X. Spiegel also promoted local punk shows in central Connecticut. The most infamous of which being "the greatest show that never happened", showcased at the New Britain VFW hall and featuring bands such as Big Gulp, Freedom of Choice, and Fallback. Shortly after the show began, during Fallback's set, a fight broke out and the show was forcibly shut down by the New Britain Police department; some of the footage was caught on a video tape that seems to have been lost. Smart Studios
Smart Studios was a recording studio located in Madison, Wisconsin. It was set up in 1983 by Butch Vig and Steve Marker to produce local bands. The studio produced bands such as Killdozer, The Smashing Pumpkins, L7, Tad, Nirvana, Hawthorne Heights, and Fall Out Boy. After initial production and remix successes, the building became the focus of operations for Vig and Marker's own band, Garbage, who released their debut album in 1995. History The studio survived various mishaps, including flooding, and a backhoe crashing through the walls of the downstairs studio in 2003. On May 1, 2010, the studio closed its doors because of financial difficulties. In September 2013, producer and musician Brian Liston re-opened the former Smart Studios facility as Clutch Sound. Caroline Records is a record label that was founded in 1973. Founded in the United Kingdom to showcase British progressive rock groups, the label ceased releasing titles in 1976 and then re-emerged in the United States in 1986. Janet Billig Rich (born 1967 as Janet Sue Billig) is an artist manager, music supervisor, producer, and Tony Award-nominated Broadway theater producer. Vaganza
Vaganza was a theatrical art-rock-pop duo consisting of multi-instrumentalists David Longworth Wallingford and Quigley. Astronaut, Skunk, and Vaganza's origins Wallingford and Quigley began formally working on the Vaganza project in late-1991. The duo's launch followed the dissolution of their respective indie groups, Astronaut (band) and Skunk (band). The pair went into seclusion for roughly two years, completely reinventing themselves visually, and developing their sound—a significant departure, both in style and complexity, from their previous ventures—in a New Jersey–based home studio. Skunk (band)
Skunk was an American alternative rock band formed in 1986 in Maplewood, New Jersey. During the group's existence Skunk released two albums on Twin/Tone Records; 1989's ''Last American Virgin'' and 1991's ''Laid''. Skunk was the first band of now respected session guitarist Matt Sweeney, who after their breakup went on to form New York City math rock quartet Chavez, and drummer Claude Coleman, Jr., best known for his decades long tenure playing with Ween. Also in the band for its entire history was bassist Matt Quigley, who later went on to form the art-pop group Vaganza. Although they were not well known while they were active, Skunk were a favorite group of Billy Corgan of the multi-platinum 90s band Smashing Pumpkins, who in 2001 joined forces with Sweeney to form the band Zwan. Lori Barbero
Lori Anne Barbero (born November 27, 1961) is an American musician. She rose to prominence as the drummer of the alternative rock band Babes in Toyland, which she formed in 1987. After the dissolution of Babes in Toyland in 2001, Barbero subsequently played drums for bands such as Eggtwist and Koalas. In 2015, she reunited with Babes in Toyland and embarked on an international tour before disbanding again in 2020. Early life Barbero was born in Minneapolis on November 27, 1961. She is of Filipino and Scandinavian descent. At the age of fourteen, her father moved the family to Pearl River, New York, where she attended high school, graduating in 1978. Babes in Toyland was an American rock band from Minneapolis, Minnesota, formed in 1987. The band was founded by vocalist and guitarist Kat Bjelland, along with drummer Lori Barbero and bassist Michelle Leon, who quit the band in 1992 and was replaced by Maureen Herman. Babes in Toyland released three studio albums: '' Spanking Machine'' (1990), followed by the commercially successful ''Fontanelle'' (1992), and ''Nemesisters'' (1995), before becoming inactive in 1997 and eventually disbanding in 2001. After the band reunited in 2014, they began performing live together for the first time in over a decade. They completed an international tour throughout 2015, during which Herman was fired and replaced with Clara Salyer, before the band broke up again in 2017.
