WSHU (AM)
WSHU (1260 AM), is an NPR member radio station licensed to Westport, Connecticut. It is owned and operated by Sacred Heart University. By day, WSHU is powered at 1,000 watts using a directional antenna. However, at night, to avoid interference with other stations on 1260 AM, it reduces power to nine watts, effectively limiting its nighttime footprint to the area immediately around Westport. Programming is also heard on 150-watt FM translator W276DY at 103.1 MHz in Westport. WSHU primarily features news, talk and informational programming from National Public Radio with local news updates throughout the day. It holds periodic fundraisers on the air to support the running of the station. WARW (FM)
WARW is a Christian worship formatted radio station, licensed to Port Chester, New York, and is the Air 1 radio affiliate for Westchester County and the Connecticut Panhandle. The station is owned by Educational Media Foundation and its transmitter is located in New Rochelle, New York. History WARW went on the air in 1947 as WSTC-FM licensed to Stamford, Connecticut, and simulcasting WSTC. On February 19, 1974, the call letters were changed to WYRS and the station began programming an automated beautiful music format aimed at women using the moniker "Yours 96.7". At 6:00 p.m. on September 2, 1980 WYRS switched to a jazz format after WRVR in New York City had switched formats from jazz to country music. WNLK (1350 AM; "Veritas Catholic Radio") is a radio station licensed to serve Norwalk, Connecticut. The station broadcasts brokered Christian radio programming. WNLK is owned by Veritas Catholic Network, Inc., after being sold by Cox Radio, Inc. in 2011 and initially operated by Sacred Heart via a local marketing agreement; prior to 2011, WNLK and WSTC simulcast a commercial news/talk format. In North American broadcasting, a local marketing agreement (LMA), or local management agreement, is a contract in which one corporation, company agrees to operate a radio station, radio or television station owned by another party. In essence, it is a sort of lease or time-buy. Under Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations, a local marketing agreement must give the company operating the station (the "senior" partner) under the agreement control over the entire facilities of the station, including the finances, personnel and programming of the station. Its original licensee (the "junior" partner) still remains legally responsible for the station and its operations, such as compliance with relevant regulations regarding content. In broadcasting, a dark television station or silent radio station is one that has gone off the air for an indefinite period of time. Usually unlike dead air (broadcasting only silence), a station that is dark or silent does not even transmit a carrier signal. U.S. law Transmitter operations According to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC), a radio or television station is considered to have gone dark or silent if it is to be off the air for thirty days or longer. Prior to the Telecommunications Act of 1996, a "dark" station was required to surrender its broadcast license to the FCC, leaving it vulnerable to another party applying for it while its current owner was making efforts to get it back on the air. Middle of the road (also known by its acronym MOR) is a commercial radio format. Music associated with this term is strongly melodic and uses techniques of vocal harmony and light orchestral arrangements. The format was similar to soft adult contemporary. In the mid-late 2000s the term "middle of the road" became used by journalists as a way to describe musicians and bands such as Train and Westlife who calibrated their musical appeal to commercial, popular music taste and avoided more innovative material.
