WSBX (FM)
WSBX (94.5 FM) is a radio station based in Mackinaw City, Michigan. History The station's original call sign was WSSW (for the station's founder, Sonora S. Wray), which was first issued in October 1986. WSSW first signed on at 94.3 on September 6, 1989, with an automated MOR format, but went dark not long after that. The station, while at 94.3, was a Class A station with an ERP of 3,000 watts, which made the station all but unlistenable outside of the Mackinaw City-St. Ignace area, a seasonal, tourist-driven market barely able to sustain the competing radio stations that were already on the air and firmly established. WSSW's management thought that perhaps packing the station with tourist-related information for the local area would help reverse its fortunes. The station did improve, but not enough. Wray sold the station to Robert A. Naismith in February 1992. WUPN (95.1 MHz) is an American FM radio station licensed to serve the community of Paradise, an unincorporated community in Whitefish Township, Chippewa County, Michigan. The station is owned by Timothy S. Ellis, through licensee TSE Broadcasting LLC. WUPN broadcasts a classic hits format to the Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, area. History In May 2007, Darby Advertising, Inc., applied to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for a construction permit for a new broadcast radio station to broadcast on a frequency of 94.7 Megahertz. The FCC granted this permit on November 4, 2008, with a scheduled expiration date of November 4, 2011. The new station was assigned call sign WUPN on November 14, 2008. AC Active was a United States 24-hour music format produced by Dial Global Local (formerly Waitt Radio Networks). Its playlist was composed of hot adult contemporary music released from the 1980s to when it stopped broadcasting from artists such as Phil Collins, Maroon 5, Matchbox Twenty, Green Day, KT Tunstall, etc. that mainly targeted listeners ages 25–44. In June 2012, due to reorganizations at Dial Global, the Dial Global Local 24/7 formats were fully integrated into Dial Global's portfolio of formats, and "Dial Global Local" ceased to exist as a brand name. However, most of the former Dial Global Local formats were still offered to affiliate stations in the same manner in which they were previously offered. AC Active continued as a Local version of Dial Global's Hot AC format. By 2020, it was no more, as it was discontinued. Dial Global Local (formerly Waitt Radio Networks) was a radio network, national radio network based in Omaha, Nebraska, formerly owned by NRG Media and purchased in April 2008 by Triton Radio Networks. As a subsidiary of Dial Global, they specialized in 24-hour formats for affiliated radio stations across the United States and Canada which are specifically localized for their client stations, although they also were known for Advertising, commercial production services. Dial Global Local also provides their affiliates with coverage of breaking news events. WMKC (102.9 FM) is a radio station licensed to Indian River, Michigan. It airs a country music format called Big Country 102.9. The station is owned by Black Diamond Broadcast Holdings, LLC. History: A Dentist's Dream Beginnings WMKC ("MacKinaC"), owned by Mighty-Mac Broadcasting Corp., signed on in January 1982 by a Lansing dentist, Donald "Doc" Benson. Benson loved country music and wanted northern Michigan to have a WITL clone for when he traveled up north. He already owned an AM in St. Ignace, WIDG ("Widge By The (Mackinac) Bridge") 940. WIDG aired various formats, but usually was MOR. In December 1979 Doc Benson closed WIDG with a "dark" license until April 12, 1981. Mio ( ) is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Oscoda County in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is the county seat of Oscoda County. The population of the CDP was 1,690 at the 2020 census. Mio is situated along the boundary between Mentor Township on the east, Big Creek Township on the west, and Elmer Township to the northwest. Glen Arbor, Michigan
Glen Arbor is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Glen Arbor Township, Leelanau County, Michigan, United States. A small tourist town, Glen Arbor lies on an isthmus between Lake Michigan and Glen Lake. It is adjacent to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Its population was 261 as of the 2020 census, up from 229 at the 2010 census. The community is located along M-22 and the Lake Michigan shore. Glen Arbor has a post office with ZIP code 49636.
