WHYM (1260 AM) is an American radio station licensed to serve Lake City, South Carolina. The station is currently owned by Community Broadcasters, LLC. The station currently simulcasts WFRK, a news/talk station known as "Live 95". Programming Syndicated talk show hosts formerly on WHYM included Glenn Beck, Dennis Miller, Fred Thompson, and Alan Colmes. Sports coverage included Fox Sports Radio, the weekday morning ''Press Box with Allen Smothers'' and University of South Carolina sports. Fox News Radio airs each hour. History The station signed on in 1953 as WJOT and aired a variety of local programming. Then the station shared some of its programming with adult standards radio station WOLS (later WTIX, now WOLH). WOLH (1230 AM) is a radio station airing a sports format known as "ESPN 96.3 - 1230". Licensed to Florence, South Carolina, United States, the station serves the Florence area. The station is owned by Community Broadcasters, LLC. The station's programming also aired on WHYM in Lake City and W255BD in Darlington. FM Translator WOLH programming is relayed to an FM translator in addition to the main frequency on 1230 kHz. History WOLH at 1230 AM was once WOLS, signing on in 1937; it was the first radio station in Florence, South Carolina. WOLS was once owned and operated by Melvin Purvis (1903–1960), the former FBI agent credited with capturing or killing John Dillinger and Pretty Boy Floyd in the 1930s. WFRK (95.3 FM broadcasting, FM), known as "Live 95", is a talk radio, talk formatted radio station licensed to Quinby, South Carolina. The station is owned by Community Broadcasters, LLC and is simulcast on WHYM and WTQS. History Originally, Frank FM aired on W246AW 97.1, a Broadcast relay station, translator with 250 watts which simulcast the WSIM HD Radio, HD-2 channel. Later, Frank FM became a full power station at 95.3. Music came from the 60s through the present, with artists that included Jimmy Buffett, The Beatles, Rod Stewart, Madonna (entertainer), Madonna, Hootie & the Blowfish and Phil Collins. The slogan was "We play it all". On July 19, 2012, WFRK began moving to a talk format as Live 95, while Frank FM returned to the translator and is again branded "97.1 Frank FM". Lake City is a city in Florence County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 6,675 at the 2010 census. Located in central South Carolina, it is south of Florence and included as part of the Florence Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The Lake City area was originally part of Williamsburg Township, which was first settled by a group of Scots-Irish in 1736. It was first called "Graham's Crossroads" and then "Graham", after Aaron Graham, a land owner around the crossroads that now form Church and Main streets in Lake City. Adult standards (also sometimes known as the nostalgia or Big Band format) is a North American radio format heard primarily on AM or class A FM stations. Adult standards started in the 1950s and is aimed at "mature" adults, meaning mainly those people over 50 years of age, but it is mostly targeted for senior citizens. It is primarily on AM because market research reveals that only persons in that age group listen to music on AM in sizable numbers. Adult standards first became a popular format in the late 1970s and early 1980s as a way to reach mature adults who came of age before the rock era but were perhaps too mature for adult contemporary radio or too young for beautiful music or MOR stations.
