WCHA (800 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station licensed to Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, and serving Franklin County, Pennsylvania. It simulcasts an oldies format with WHAG in Hagerstown, Maryland. WCHA and WHAG are owned and operated by Alpha Media. Most programming comes from the True Oldies Channel, programmed and hosted by New York City DJ Scott Shannon. WCHA also carries Penn State football and Pittsburgh Steelers football. By day, WCHA is powered at 1,000 watts non-directional. Because 800 AM is a Mexican clear channel frequency reserved for Class A station XEROK in Ciudad Juarez, WCHA reduces power to 196 watts at night to avoid interference. AM stereo is a term given to a series of mutually incompatible techniques for radio broadcasting stereo audio in the AM band in a manner that is compatible with standard AM receivers. There are two main classes of systems: independent sideband (ISB) systems, promoted principally by American broadcast engineer Leonard R. C-QUAM
C-QUAM (Compatible QUadrature Amplitude Modulation) is the method of AM stereo broadcasting used in Canada, the United States and most other countries. It was invented in 1977 by Norman Parker, Francis Hilbert, and Yoshio Sakaie, and published in an IEEE journal. Using circuitry developed by Motorola, C-QUAM uses quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) to encode the stereo separation signal. This extra signal is then stripped down in such a way that it is compatible with the envelope detector of older receivers, hence the name C-QUAM for Compatible. A 25 Hz pilot tone is added to trigger receivers; unlike its counterpart in FM radio, this carrier is not necessary for the reconstruction of the original audio sources. XEROK-AM
XEROK-AM (800 kHz) is a commercial radio station in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico. It is licensed to operate with a power of 150,000 watts on a carrier frequency of 800 kHz, although its new transmitter outputs 50,000 watts. XEROK is the dominant Class A station on 800 AM, a Mexican clear channel frequency. The station had a colorful history as a border blaster, aiming its programming at listeners in the United States, when at night, its 150,000-watt signal could be easily heard in many parts of the Southwest.
