Vortex Tower
The Vortex Tower was the working name of a London skyscraper design by Make Architects, a London-based business headed by Ken Shuttleworth. The building would have risen to a height of ''The Guardian''Twisting tower will be London's highest 19 June 2004 with 70 floors. The Vortex Tower was proposed for the edge of the City of London outer eastern fringe, but was never built. The planned shape of the Vortex Tower was a hyperboloid of revolution. The structure would have twisted into a spiral shape with a tapering centre and wide base. The project was based on a different concept, with rotation enabling the use of leaning columns as straight structural elements of hyperboloid. Shuttleworth expressed surprise when the design was compared to that of the similar Kobe Port Tower, built in Japan in 1963. Make Architects is an international architecture practice headquartered in London that also has offices in offices in Hong Kong and Sydney. Founded in 2004 by former Foster + Partners architect Ken Shuttleworth. The practice has a variety of projects including high-rise office buildings, large mixed-use schemes, urban masterplanning, sports and leisure, private and social housing, civic and education buildings, and interior design. In geometry, a hyperboloid of revolution, sometimes called a circular hyperboloid, is the surface generated by rotating a hyperbola around one of its principal axes. The is a landmark in the port city of Kobe, Japan. The sightseeing tower was completed in 1963 and was temporarily closed from late 2009 to 28 April 2010 for renovation. It is located in the Central District, Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. History The Kobe Port Tower was designed by the Nikken Sekkei Company and it was completed in 1963. Ken Shuttleworth (architect)
Ken Shuttleworth (born September 1952 in Birmingham) is an English architect. Shuttleworth studied architecture at the Leicester School of Architecture, De Montfort University, where his fluid draftsmanship earned him the nickname "Ken the Pen". Shuttleworth became a partner at Foster and Partners where he worked on some of the world's most iconic buildings. He joined the practice in 1977, moving to Hong Kong in 1979 to oversee the design and construction of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation’s headquarters. Returning to the UK in 1986, he proceeded to build up a diverse portfolio of experience including the Carré d'Art in Nîmes, the ITN building in London, Cranfield University Library, Hong Kong’s Chek Lap Kok airport, the Al Faisaliah development in Riyadh, London’s Millennium Bridge, 30 St Mary Axe ('The Gherkin’) and City Hall.
