Horace Jeremiah "Jerry" Voorhis (April 6, 1901 – September 11, 1984) was a Democratic politician and educator from California who served five terms in the United States House of Representatives from 1937 to 1947, representing the 12th congressional district in Los Angeles County. He was the first political opponent of Richard M. Nixon, who defeated Voorhis for re-election in 1946 in a campaign cited as an example of Nixon's use of red-baiting during his political rise. Voorhis was born in Kansas, but the family relocated frequently in his childhood. He earned a bachelor's degree from Yale University (where he was elected to the academic honor society Phi Beta Kappa) and a master's degree in education from Claremont Graduate School. Daniel Van Voorhis (October 24, 1878 – January 9, 1956) was a United States Army lieutenant general and was noteworthy for his assignments as commander of V Corps and the Caribbean Defense Command, as well as his efforts in creating the Army's modern armor branch. Early life The son of Congressman Henry Clay Van Voorhis, he was born on October 24, 1878, in Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio. He attended Ohio Wesleyan University and Pennsylvania's Washington and Jefferson College, where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. Start of military career Van Voorhis left college to enlist for the Spanish–American War as a corporal in the 10th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment. Bruce Avery Van Voorhis (January 29, 1908 – July 6, 1943) was a United States Navy aviator who was shot down in the Pacific theater during World War II. For his action on July 6, 1943, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. Biography Van Voorhis was born on January 29, 1908 in Aberdeen, Washington and grew up in Nevada. John Van Voorhis (October 22, 1826October 20, 1905) was an American lawyer and politician from New York. Early life Van Voorhis was born in 1826 in Decatur, New York. His family moved several times before settling in the town of Mendon. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in December 1851, and commenced practice in Elmira, New York in the spring of 1853. He soon chose to relocate to Rochester, New York and opened his own practice on July 4, 1854, where he was eventually joined by his brother Quincy and sons Eugene and Charles. Career Van Voorhis was a member of the Board of Education in 1857 and was City Attorney of Rochester in 1859. He was appointed Collector of Internal Revenue for the 28th District of New York and held that office from September 1, 1862, to March 31, 1863. John H. Van Voorhis (June 14, 1897 – November 25, 1983) was an American lawyer and politician. Life Van Voorhis was born on June 14, 1897, in Irondequoit, Monroe County, New York, the son of Eugene Van Voorhis (c.1864–1943) and Allis (Sherman) Van Voorhis. He graduated A.B. from Yale College in 1919. He was admitted to the bar in 1922, and commenced the practice of law at Rochester, New York. On June 2, 1928, he married Linda Gale Lyon (ca. 1902-1989), and they had three children. He was Town Attorney of Irondequoit from 1928 to 1933, and in 1936. Henry Clay Van Voorhis (May 11, 1852 – December 12, 1927) was a United States Congressman from Muskingum Co., Ohio. Biography He was born to Daniel and Jane (Roberts) Van Voorhis in Nashport, Ohio. His father moved to Muskingum Co., Ohio from Washington County, Pennsylvania in 1812 with his parents, and became a member of the Ohio Legislature during the Civil War. Troy A. Van Voorhis (born 1976) is an American chemist. He is currently the Haslam and Dewey Professor of Chemistry at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. John Voorhis "Tim" Bogert III (August 27, 1944 – January 13, 2021) was an American musician. He graduated in 1963 from Ridgefield Memorial High School in his hometown of Ridgefield, New Jersey. As a bass guitarist and vocalist he was best known for his powerful vocal ability and his fast runs, fluid agility and ground-breaking sound on his Fender Precision bass. He was one of the pioneers of using distortion with his bass to help it cut through the mix with the low-powered amps of his time which also imparted a very sharp-edged sound to it.
