The House of Vitelli, among other families so named, were a prominent noble family of Umbria, rulers of Città di Castello and lesser '' rocche''. History In spite of ambitious genealogies, there is no demonstrable connection with the ancient Roman Vitellius (gens). The Vitelli had been rich merchants of Città di Castello, who made themselves masters of the town in the early fourteenth century, after civic confrontations with the rival Guelf faction of the Brancaleone, and henceforward wielded political and military influence disproportionate to their small territory, as supporters of the Papacy. Vitellius (gens)
The gens Vitellia was a family of ancient Rome, which rose from obscurity in imperial times, and briefly held the Empire itself in AD 69. The first of this gens to obtain the consulship was Aulus Vitellius, uncle of the emperor Vitellius, in AD 32.''Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology'', vol. III, p. 1272 ("Vitellii"). Origin Suetonius relates two conflicting accounts of the Vitellii, which he ascribes to the emperor's flatterers and his detractors, respectively. According to the first account, the family was descended from Faunus, King of the Aborigines, and Vitellia, who ruled over Latium in the distant past, and were later regarded as two of the indigenous deities. The Vitellii were Sabines, who migrated to Rome under the monarchy, and were enrolled among the patricians. Vitellozzo Vitelli
Vitellozzo Vitelli (c. 1458December 31, 1502) was an Italian condottiero. He was lord of Montone, Città di Castello, Monterchi and Anghiari. Biography Together with his father, Niccolò, who became lord of Città di Castello, and his brothers, who all at one time or other were condottieri (mercenary captains), this family instituted a new type of infantry armed with sword and pike to resist the German men-at-arms, and also a corps of mounted infantry armed with arquebuses. Vitellozzo served the Medici of Florence in their war against Pisa, and later with the French in Apulia in 1496 and with the Orsini faction against Pope Alexander VI. In 1500 Vitellozzo and the Orsini made peace with the pope, and the latter's son Cesare Borgia, being determined to crush the petty tyrants of Romagna and consolidate papal power in that province, took the condottieri into his service. Paolo Vitelli (born in Turin on October 4, 1947) is an Italian businessman, the founder in 1969 of the motor yacht company Azimut. He is currently president of Azimut Benetti Group. From March 2013 to September 2015, he was a member of parliament in Italy’s Legislature XVII, after being elected in the Civic Choice List with Monti for Italy. He was Honorary Consul of Norway from 1974 to 2018. Career Entrepreneur Paolo Vitelli graduated in June 1970 with a degree in economics and business, after a four-year course of study. Chiappino Vitelli
Giovan Luigi "Chiappino" Vitelli (1519 – July 1575) was an Italian marquis and military leader, son of Niccolò Vitelli. Vitelli served as captain under Cosimo I de' Medici in his wars to gain Florence, Siena and Montalcino, and was appointed governor of Piombino (1543). He was also a general in the Spanish Army of Flanders, as well as Tuscan ambassador in the England of Elizabeth I. He was marquis of Cetona, that he acquired from Cosimo I de' Medici (1556). Here, he restored the fortress and built the ''Piazza Vitelli'' town square (1559), today the ''Piazza Garibaldi'', as well as the Palazzo Vitelli which can be seen today, holding a significant art collection. Francesco Vitelli
Francesco Vitelli (1586–1646) was a Roman Catholic ecclesiastic in the papal service. Vitelli was born in Città di Castello. He was made titular archbishop of Thessalonica (16 August 1632), then successively transferred to Terni (1634) and to Urbino (1636) and appointed papal nuncio to the Republic of Venice. In 1643 Pope Urban VIII Barberini appointed him Governor of Rome, an honorary position that his absence as bishop of Urbino disabled him from taking up. He was a correspondent of the papal diplomat Guido Bentivoglio, who addressed to him his ''Relationi'' concerning Flanders, 1633. Niccolò Vitelli
Niccolò Vitelli (1414–1486) was an Italian condottiero of the Vitelli family from Città di Castello. The son of Giovanni Vitelli and Maddalena dei Marchesi di Petriolo, he was orphaned and grew up under the tutelage of his uncle Vitellozzo who introduced him into the political life of the area. He was ''podestà'' in some of the major Italian cities, such as Florence, Siena, Genoa and Perugia. He frequently clashed with the Popes Paul II and Sixtus IV for the rule of Città di Castello. In 1474 he was besieged in the city by Giuliano della Rovere (future Pope Julius II) and Federico III da Montefeltro. He had to leave the city, to which he however returned in 1482. The following year he was excommunicated and, in 1484, left Città di Castello again, only to return shortly after Sixtus IV's death. Joe Vitelli
Antonio Joseph Vitelli (April 12, 1908 – February 7, 1967) was a Major League Baseball pitcher who played for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1944 and 1945. The , right-hander was a native of McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania. Vitelli is one of many ballplayers who only appeared in the major leagues during World War II. He made his major league debut at age 36 on May 30, 1944 in a doubleheader against the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field. The Pirates' game on May 21 was suspended due to the Sunday blue laws and completed on July 5. The game was suspended after 8 innings; Vitelli participated in the 9th inning played July 5. He appeared in the final inning of suspended game, but since statistical data is labeled with the original date of the game, some sources list his debut as May 21. Azimut Yachts is an Italian yacht-manufacturing company based in Viareggio, Italy. It was established in 1969 by Paolo Vitelli. The company started with sailing boat chartering, later developing into a large luxury yacht building industry.
