Van Rensselaer Richmond
Van Rensselaer Richmond (January 1812 in Preston, New York, Preston, Chenango County, New York – November 20, 1883 in Lyons, New York, Lyons, Wayne County, New York) was an American civil engineer and politician from New York. Life He was the son of Oliver Richmond (d. 1853). He was educated at the Oxford, New York, Oxford Academy, and in 1834 began work as a Gunter's chain, chainman at the construction of the Chenango Canal. In 1837 he married Anna A. Dennison (d. 1854), and they had four children. In 1837, he was appointed Resident Engineer of the Erie Canal at Lyons, New York. In 1842, he was appointed Division Engineer of the Middle Division of the State Canals at Syracuse, New York, Syracuse. In 1848, he resigned and began to work for the Oswego and Syracuse Railroad, but soon after returned to canal work as Chief Engineer of the construction of the canal from Jordan, New York to the Cayuga Marshes. Preston, New York
Preston is a town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 1,044 at the 2010 census. Preston is an interior town of Chenango County and is west of the city of Norwich. History The first settler arrived ''circa'' 1787. The town was formed from the town of Norwich in 1806, but some of Preston was relinquished to Norwich in 1808. In 1816, part of Preston was used to form the new town of McDonough. In 1820, another section of Norwich was added to Preston. In the year 1865, the population of the town was 982. The botanist Frederick Vernon Coville (1867–1937), author of ''Botany of the Death Valley Expedition'', was born in Preston. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and , or 0.49%, is water.
