Gastropod Shell
The gastropod shell is part of the body of a Gastropoda, gastropod or snail, a kind of mollusc. The shell is an exoskeleton, which protects from predators, mechanical damage, and dehydration, but also serves for muscle attachment and calcium storage. Some gastropods appear shell-less (slugs) but may have a remnant within the mantle, or in some cases the shell is reduced such that the body cannot be retracted within it (semi-slug). Some snails also possess an operculum that seals the opening of the shell, known as the Aperture (mollusc), aperture, which provides further protection. The study of mollusc shells is known as conchology. The biological study of gastropods, and other molluscs in general, is malacology. Shell morphology terms vary by species group. Wilhelm Dunker
Wilhelm Dunker, full name Wilhelm Bernhard Rudolph Hadrian Dunker (21 February 1809, Eschwege – 13 March 1885, Marburg) was a German geologist, paleontologist and zoologist (specifically a malacologist). Wilhelm Dunker studied mining and metallurgical engineering in Göttingen and worked at first as a trainee with the local mining authority. Soon thereafter he was appointed a teacher of mineralogical sciences at the poly-technical school in Kassel. In 1854 he was appointed professor at the University of Marburg, at which he taught up to his death. Dunker was one of the most important malacologists of his time. He had a very extensive private collection of snails and shells, which he constantly increased by exchange with other collectors (and probably also by purchases). Heinrich Christian Friedrich Schumacher (15 November 1757 in Glückstadt, Holstein – 9 December 1830) was a Danish surgeon, botanist and professor of anatomy at the University of Copenhagen. Schumacher carried out significant research work in malacology, in other words on molluscs, and described several taxa. Life Early years (1757-1778) He was born to Joachim Christian Schumacher, a sergeant in the infantry of the Duchy of Schleswig, and his wife, Caroline Magdalene in Glückstadt in present-day Germany. Arthur Adams (zoologist)
Arthur Adams (1820 in Gosport, Hampshire – 1878) was an English physician and naturalist. Adams was assistant surgeon Royal Navy on board HMS ''Samarang'' during the survey of the islands of the Eastern Archipelago, from 1843 to 1846. He edited the ''Zoology of the voyage of H.M.S. Samarang'' (1850). Adam White collaborated with him in the descriptions of the Crustacea from the voyage. In 1857, during the Second China War whilst serving as Surgeon on HMS ''Actaeon'', he was present at the storming of Canton and awarded the China War Medal. He retired as Staff Surgeon aboard flagship HMS ''Royal Adelaide'' at Plymouth in 1870. He was a prolific malacologist who described "hundreds of new species, most of them unillustrated and insufficiently diagnosed". ''Phenacovolva rosea'', also known as the rosy spindle cowry, is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusc in the family Ovulidae, the ovulids, cowry allies or false cowries. It lives and feeds on fan, whip and bush-type gorgonians. Description The rosy spindle cowry is an elongated species with an aperture along the entire length of the shell. The shape is fusiform (cigar-shaped), with slender tapering ends and a slightly broader central section. Adult shells measure between in length and the spire is almost invisible. There are crenelations on the lip of the aperture at the dorsal end, but these decrease in size towards the centre of the shell.
