Virgil Conn
Virgil Conn (January 31, 1847 – February 27, 1931) was an American businessman and state legislator from the state of Oregon. He served two two-year terms in the Oregon House of Representatives as a Republican legislator, representing a large rural district in south-central Oregon. He also ran a general store in Paisley, Oregon, and was that town's postmaster for many years. Later in his life, he owned a dairy farm near Roseburg, Oregon. Early life Conn was born in Royal Center, Indiana, on January 31, 1847, the son of Henry ("Harry") Conn and Mary Jane (Stultz) Conn. In 1854, he moved with his family to Oregon, crossing the country in a covered wagon. Bernard Daly
Bernard Daly (17 February 1858 – 4 January 1920) was an American country doctor, businessman, banker, rancher, state representative, state senator, county judge, and regent of Oregon State Agricultural College (today's Oregon State University). He also ran for United States Congress, and was his party's candidate for the United States Senate. Daly's educational trust fund has financed college educations for generations of Lake County, Oregon students, a legacy that continues to this day. Life Daly was born in Ireland on 17 February 1858. He immigrated with his parents to the United States in 1864, and the family settled in Selma, Alabama. As a young man, Daly attended college in Ohio, and then medical school at the University of Louisville in Kentucky. After graduating from medical school, he joined the United States Army, and was posted to Fort Bidwell, California. Jefferson County is one of the 36 counties in the U.S. state of Oregon. At the 2020 census, the population was 24,502. The county seat is Madras. The county is named after Mount Jefferson. History Jefferson County was created on December 12, 1914, from a portion of Crook County. The county owes much of its agricultural prosperity to the railroad, which links Madras with the Columbia River, and was completed in 1911, and to the development of irrigation projects in the late 1930s. The railroad was completed despite constant feuds and battles between two lines working on opposite sides of the Deschutes River. Madras was incorporated in 1911, and has been the permanent county seat since a general election in 1916. Deschutes County is one of the 36 counties in the U.S. state of Oregon. As of the 2020 census, the population was 198,253. The county seat is Bend. The county was created in 1916 out of part of Crook County and was named for the Deschutes River, which itself was named by French-Canadian trappers of the early 19th century.
