Vaugines
Vaugines (; ) is a commune in the Vaucluse department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southeastern France. It lies on the southern slopes of the Luberon Massif. Vaugines has preserved its Provençal style, with its peaceful decorated lanes of traditional stone rural houses. The countryside surrounding Vaugines is wild and typical of Provence, and was chosen by film director Claude Berri for the filming of parts of his adaptions of Marcel Pagnol's novels '' Jean de Florette'' and '' Manon des Sources''. British expatriate writer Peter Mayle lived in Vaugines until his death in 2018. One of his books, ''A Year in Provence'', giving the chronicle of a British expatriate who settled in the village of Ménerbes, was made into a TV series and a film. Jean De Florette
''Jean de Florette'' () is a 1986 period drama film directed by Claude Berri. It was followed by '' Manon des sources'', released the same year. Both are the adaptation of Marcel Pagnol’s 1963 two-part novel '' The Water of the Hills'', with the second part also being adapted from Pagnol's original 1952 film '' Manon of The Spring''. Berri's version was the first attempt at adapting the whole saga, including the first part, ''Jean de Florette'', which was originally written as a prequel to the novelization of ''Manon of The Spring''. The story takes place in rural Provence in the 1920s, where two local farmers plot to trick a newcomer out of his newly inherited property. The film starred three of France's most prominent actors – Gérard Depardieu, Daniel Auteuil, who won a BAFTA and a César award for his performance, and Yves Montand in one of his last roles. Côtes Du Luberon AOC
Luberon ( or ; known as ''Côtes du Luberon'' until 2009) is a French wine-growing AOC in the southeastern extreme of the Rhône wine region of France, where the wines are produced in 36 communes of the Vaucluse département. The neighbouring appellation of Ventoux AOC stretches along its northern border and is separated by the Calavon river. The southern limit of the region is marked by the Durance river. Economy The Luberon wines are produced by a total of 495 concerns which include 480 growers, 55 private wineries, 14 cooperative wineries, and one producer/merchant. Luberon
The Luberon ( or ; Provençal dialect, Provençal: ''Leberon'' or ''Leberoun'' ) is a massif in central Provence in Southern France, part of the French Prealps. It has a maximum elevation of and an area of about . It is composed of three mountain ranges (from west to east): Lesser Luberon (''Petit Luberon''), Greater Luberon (''Grand Luberon'') and Eastern Luberon (''Luberon oriental''). The valleys north and south of them contain a number of towns and villages as well as agricultural land; the northern part is marked by the Calavon, while the southern part is characterised by the Durance. Peter Mayle ( "mail"; 14 June 1939 – 18 January 2018) was a British businessman turned author who moved to France in the 1980s. He wrote a series of bestselling memoirs of his life there, beginning with '' A Year in Provence'' (1989). Early life Born in Brighton, Sussex, the youngest of three children, Mayle and his parents moved to Barbados in the aftermath of World War II, where his father was transferred as a Colonial Office employee. Ménerbes
Ménerbes (; ) is a commune in the Vaucluse department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of Southeastern France. The walled village on a hilltop in the Luberon mountains, foothills of the French Alps, constitutes the main settlement in the commune. In 2019, it had a population of 1,002. It is a member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France (The Most Beautiful Villages of France) Association.
