Its population is 10,914 (2022). History Some 5,200 Armenians were living in the district of Varto in 1914, including 600 in the town of Varto. Eight churches, 3 monasteries and 5 schools tended to their to spiritual needs. In June 1915 during the Armenian genocide, a great number of Varto's Armenians were massacred in the valley of Newala Ask. The 1966 Varto earthquake occurred on 19 August with a moment magnitude of 6.8 a maximum Mercalli intensity of IX (''Violent''). Künav Cave
Künav Cave () is a Karstic cave located near Kayadelen village of Varto district of Muş province, Turkey. The cave is 3 kilometers long and 15 km away from Varto district center. The ceiling height of Künav Cave is around 35 meters in places and consists of two floors, and river-sized water passes through the lower floor. The Kayalıdere Castle (), is a historical castle on a rocky hill in the Varto district of Muş. This castle was one of the most important checkpoints for the kingdom of Urartu. Bingöl Mountains (; ) is a mountain range in Turkey at the zero point of the provincial border of Erzurum and Muş. Geology and geomorphology Bingöl Mountains is an example of Shield volcanoes. Dağkale Hill, which is the highest point of the Bingöl Mountains, is located within the borders of Varto district. Its height is 3193 m, length is 50–55 km, width is 30–35 km, area is 1500 km2. Akdoğan Mountains (); (); is a mountain range located at the zero point of the Muş and Erzurum border. It extends from the east of Akdoğan lake to Karaçoban district by crossing the border where Varto, Bulanık and Hınıs districts intersect.
