Valya Dudycz Lupescu is a Ukrainian American writer of magic realism and speculative fiction. Background and personal life A second-generation Ukrainian American, Lupescu's writing reflects both her Ukrainian heritage and her American life. She holds an MFA in Writing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a B.A. in English from DePaul University, Chicago. She has taught at DePaul University, Loyola University, and Columbia College in Chicago. Lupescu is the daughter of retired Illinois state senator Walter Dudycz. She is divorced and lives in Chicago, Illinois with her partner and writer, Stephen H. Segal and her three children. Works Lupescu's debut novel,''The Silence of Trees,'' was published in 2010 by Wolfsword Press and was selected as a semifinalist in the 2008 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award. Valya Balkanska
Valya Mladenova Balkanska (; born 8 January 1942) is a Bulgarian folk music singer from the Rhodope Mountains known locally for her wide repertoire of Balkan folk songs, but in the West mainly for singing the song " Izlel ye Delyo Haydutin", part of the Voyager Golden Record selection of music included in the two Voyager spacecraft launched in 1977. Early life Born as Feyme Kestebekova () in a Pomak family in a hamlet near the village of Arda, Smolyan Province, Balkanska has been singing Rhodope folk songs since her early childhood. Career Balkanska performs a repertoire of over 300 songs in Bulgaria and abroad. Balkanska has been working with the Rodopa State Ensemble for Folk Songs and Dances from Smolyan, of which she is a soloist, since 1960. Her album ''Glas ot vechnostta'' (''Voice from the Eternity''), released in 2004, is a compilation of her best-known songs, including "A bre yunache ludo i mlado", "Goro le goro zelena", and "Maychinko stara maychinko". Valya Samvelyan
Valya Samvelyan (; born 12 August 1937 – died 3 December 1990) was an Armenians, Armenian Folk music, folk singer. Career She initially started her artistic career practicing Soviet Bard_(Soviet_Union)#Tourist_song, ''samodeyatelnost'' (amateur song), but afterwards won a competition held by the Public Radio of Armenia, Yerevan Radio and became a soloist of the Ensemble of Folk Instruments of Public Radio of Armenia. Some of the most popular songs in her interpretation were "Anushik im quyrik", "Antsar aygus nayelov", "Zov gisher", and "Shorora" by Sayat-Nova, Gusans, gusan Sheram, Alexey Ekimyan, and others. She died in a car accident in 1990. Her son Ara Gevorgyan is the producer of her posthumous "Toghetsir indz menak" ("You left me alone") and "Anushik im quyrik" ("My sweet sister") albums.
