The Vār or Vaar (, ), in Punjabi poetry, is a heroic ode or ballad which generally narrates legend such as stories of Punjabi folk heroes or a historical event.''The Encyclopaedia of Indian Literature (Volume One - A to Devo)''. Varan Bhai Gurdas
Varan Bhai Gurdas (Gurmukhi: ਵਾਰਾਂ ਭਾਈ ਗੁਰਦਾਸ ''vārāṁ bhā'ī guradāsa''; meaning "ballads of Bhai Gurdas"), also known as Varan Gyan Ratnavali (), is the name given to the 40 Var (poetry), ''vars'' (a form of Punjabi poetry) which is traditionally attributed to Bhai Gurdas. History Background The first widely-accepted and available extant Sikh writings were put-down to writing in the 1570's, namely being the two extant recensions (out of four originally) of the ''Goindwal Pothis'' and the ''Puratan Janamsakhi''. Asa Di Var
''Asa di Var'' (Gurmukhi: ਆਸਾ ਦੀ ਵਾਰ) meaning "A ballad of hope", is a collection of 24 stanzas (''pauris'') in the Guru Granth Sahib, from ang 462 to ang 475. Some people argue that the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak Dev, wrote the first 9 stanzas together on one occasion and later wrote 15 more on a different occasion; however, some Sikh scholars believe that the whole '' vaar'' was written at the same place as the ''vaar'' itself proceeds in a definite uniformity. Gurmukhi
Gurmukhī ( , Shahmukhi: ) is an abugida developed from the Laṇḍā scripts, standardized and used by the second Sikh guru, Guru Angad (1504–1552). Commonly regarded as a Sikh script, Gurmukhi is used in Punjab, India as the official script of the Punjabi language. In the past, the script was also employed to write scientific and poetic literature from both Sanskritic and Persian traditions in the Braj language. Dulla Bhatti
Rai Abdullah Khan Bhatti (23 July 1547 – 26 March 1599) popularly known through his moniker Dulla or Dullah Bhatti, was a Punjabi folk hero who led a revolt against Mughal rule during the reign of Emperor Akbar. He is entirely absent from the recorded history of the time, and the only evidence of his existence comes from Punjabi folk songs. The deeds of Bhatti are recounted in folklore and took the form of social banditry. Punjabi literature, specifically literary works written in the Punjabi language, is characteristic of the historical Punjab of present-day Pakistan and India and the Punjabi diaspora. The Punjabi language is written in several scripts, of which the Shahmukhi and Gurmukhī scripts are the most commonly used in Western Punjab and Eastern Punjab, respectively. A raga ( ; , ; ) is a melodic framework for improvisation in Indian classical music akin to a musical mode, melodic mode. It is central to classical Indian music. Each raga consists of an array of melodic structures with musical motifs; and, from the perspective of the Indian tradition, the resulting music has the ability to "colour the mind" as it engages the emotions of the audience. Dhadi (music)
Dhadi ( (Gurmukhi), Dhādi), also spelled as Dhadhi, is one who sings ballads using Dhadd and Sarangi, the folk instruments of Punjab. According to Kahn Singh Nabha's Mahan Kosh the definition of ''dhadhi'' is "One who sings ballads of warriors playing Dhadd". Dhadis are a distinct group performers emerged in the time of Sikh gurus. Punjabi Folklore
Punjabi folklore (more particularly its folksongs) is a core part of the Punjabi culture. Other important components of Punjabi folklore are farces, anecdotes, idioms, folktales, and sayings. Research Origin Richard Carnac Temple argued in his 1884 work, ''The Legends of the Punjab'', that the plot structure of Punjabi folktales and Bhat Vahis, bardic poetry was indistinguishable from one another, albeit with the bardic poems being more textually conservative (as they had been governed by Metre (poetry), metre and rhyme due to being in verse form). Bhagat is a term used in the Indian subcontinent to describe religious figures who have obtained high acclaim in their communities for their acts and devotion.
