Uvais Mohamed Imitiyas
Uvais Mohamed Imitiyas was the Mayor of Colombo from 2006 to 2011. Imtiyas was an Auto rickshaw driver from an impoverished background who contested local government elections on an independent ticket. At that stage he had no realistic chance of being elected. However, technical electoral issues (proposing an underage candidate in the list) meant that the United National Party, UNP candidates led by Sirisena Cooray could not contest the election. An agreement was reached to use the symbol of Imitiyas's group on the condition that he would renounce the seat if elected, allowing the UNP to appoint a mayor of their own choice. UNP led by Cooray campaigned for the independent group and they won under the spectacles symbol, but Imitiyas reneged on the agreement and remained in office, joining the ruling UPFA and did not stand for re-election. Worship is an honorific prefix for mayors, Justice of the Peace, justices of the peace and magistrates in present or former Commonwealth realms. An independent or non-partisan politician is a politician not affiliated with any political party or bureaucratic association. Mayor Of Colombo
The Mayor of Colombo is the Mayor (and head) of the Colombo Municipal Council. The post was created in 1866 when the Colombo Municipal Council was established by the Legislative Council of Ceylon. The Mayor is assisted by the Deputy Mayor and a Municipal Commissioner. Since 1944 the majority of the mayors have been from the United National Party. Election The mayor is elected in a general election held under the ''Local Authority Election Ordinance'' from the party gaining the highest number of seats in the municipal council. United National Party
The United National Party, often abbreviated as UNP ( si, එක්සත් ජාතික පක්ෂය, translit=Eksath Jāthika Pakshaya, ta, ஐக்கிய தேசியக் கட்சி, translit=Aikkiya Tēciyak Kaṭci), is a centre-right political party in Sri Lanka. Sirisena Cooray
Bulathsinghalage Sirisena Cooray, JP (25 April 1931 – 30 November 2021) was a Sri Lankan politician. Biography He was the Mayor of Colombo from 1979 to 1989 and was elected from Colombo to Parliament in the 9th parliamentary election in 1989. He was appointed Minister of Housing and Construction in the Premadasa cabinet. He had served as General Secretary of the United National Party during the tenure of party leader Ranasinghe Premadasa. He submitted nominations for the Colombo Municipal Council elections in 2006 as the Mayor, however his party nominations list was rejected by the election commission on a technicality. The independent party backed by Sirisena won the election and Uvais Mohamed Imitiyas became Mayor. His brother Nandasena Cooray was a one time Deputy Mayor of Colombo and was married to the sister of the former JVP leader Somawansa Amarasinghe. Mayors Of Colombo
In many countries, a mayor is the highest-ranking official in a municipal government such as that of a city or a town. Worldwide, there is a wide variance in local laws and customs regarding the powers and responsibilities of a mayor as well as the means by which a mayor is elected or otherwise mandated.
