Ural (region)
Ural (russian: Урал) is a geographical region located around the Ural Mountains, between the East European and West Siberian plains. It is considered a part of Eurasian Steppe, extending approximately from the North to the South; from the Arctic Ocean to the end of the Ural River near Orsk city. The border between Europe and Asia runs along the Eastern side of the Ural Mountains. Ural mostly lies within Russia but also includes a small part of Northwestern Kazakhstan. This is a historical, not an official entity, with borders overlapping its Western Volga and Eastern Siberia neighboring regions. At some point in the past, parts of the currently existing Ural region were considered a gateway to Siberia, or even Siberia itself, and were combined with the Volga administrative the divisions. Mihraç Ural, also known as Ali Kayyali (Arabic:علي كيالي), is a Turkish- Syrian Alawite militant and leader of the Syrian Resistance (formerly known as the Popular Front for the Liberation of the Sanjak of Iskandarun), a pro- Syrian government militia. History Ural was born in 1956 into an Arab family in Hatay Province, Turkey. He studied philosophy at Istanbul University. Ural was detained on 10 March 1978 over a bank robbery and was imprisoned at Adana. He escaped through a 150m tunnel in August 1980. After his escape from prison, he fled to Syria where he was granted Syrian citizenship by Jamil al-Assad. In Syria, Ural ran a splinter faction of the People's Liberation Party-Front of Turkey. In 1982 he was arrested in Stuttgart, Germany, and spent time in prison. Ural has led the Popular Front for the Liberation of the Sanjak of Iskenderun, now known as the Syrian Resistance, since 1986. ''Uralsky Sovremennik'' ( rus, Уральский современник, lit. "contemporary Ural"), later known as simply ''Ural'' ( rus, Урал), was a literary almanac published in the Soviet Union from 1938 to 1957. The magazine was based in Sverdlovsk. It mostly published the works of the authors from the Ural region. The almanac was operated by the Sverdlovsk department of the Union of Soviet Writers. The almanac was founded as ''Uralsky Sovremennik'' in 1938 by Klavdiya Rozhdestvenskaya, the editor-in-chief of the Sverdlovsk Publishing House. It existed under that title until 1956, with 33 volumes released. Among editors of the almanac were Klavdiya Rozhdestvenskaya herself, the famous Ural writer Pavel Bazhov, N. Popova, V. A. Starikov. FC Ural Yekaterinburg (russian: ФК Урал) is a Russian association football club based in Yekaterinburg. They play in the Russian Premier League. History The club was founded in 1930 and was known as Avangard (1930–1948, 1953–1957), Zenit (1944–1946), Mashinostroitel (1958–1959), and Uralmash (1949–1952, 1960–2002). The club is currently named after the Russian region of Ural, where Yekaterinburg is the capital. The club participated in the Soviet championships beginning in 1945. PBC Ural Great Perm was a Russian professional basketball club that was located in Perm, Russia. The club's home arena was Molot Sports Hall. The team played in the Russian Super League. History The club was established in the year 1995 on the basis of the local Technical University team. Ural Great won the Russian League championship on two occasions, in the years 2001 and 2002 and the Russian Cup in the year 2004. They also won the NEBL championship in the year 2001.
