Unmap
''Unmap'' is the debut studio album by the indie rock band Volcano Choir. It was recorded in the fall of 2008 in Fall Creek, Wisconsin and released on September 22, 2009 on Jagjaguwar. The album reached #92 on the ''Billboard'' 200. The album was reissued on April 7, 2015 exclusively through Newbury Comics. A limit of 500 vinyl copies were to be pressed but a communication error with the manufacturer led to an extra 250 copies of the reissue, amounting to a limited supply of 750 vinyl copies. Stickers attached to the album citing the 500-copy release were covered by new stickers citing the run of 750. Volcano Choir is an American indie rock band from Wisconsin, formed in 2005. It has released two albums, ''Unmap'' and ''Repave.'' History The band began as a collaboration between Bon Iver's Justin Vernon and members of Collections of Colonies of Bees. Their debut album, ''Unmap'', was released on September 22, 2009, reaching number 92 on the Billboard Top 200 record chart, chart. The band toured on the success of this release, with a large string of shows around Japan in November 2010 being their most notable run. Since the band's formation, Jon Mueller (Death Blues) and Thomas Wincek (of All Tiny Creatures) have left Collections of Colonies of Bees, but continue to be members of Volcano Choir. They have also added Matthew Skemp on bass, who also plays in All Tiny Creatures. ''Repave'' is the second studio album by American indie rock band Volcano Choir, released on September 2, 2013 on Jagjaguwar. Recorded between November 2010 and March 2013, the album is self-produced by the band. Released to critical acclaim, the album reached number forty-eight on the UK Albums Chart. Background and recording Volcano Choir began work on ''Repave'' in November 2010, choosing to record in the band's home state of Wisconsin. Recording would continue for almost two and a half years, with its eight songs changing throughout. Guitarist Chris Rosenau noted, "The kind of time that ''Repave'' took was by necessity, because of other projects and things that everyone had going on. As we started embracing those time periods off, we started letting these songs just sit in our brains and percolate through driving to work, or doing whatever we were doing." Newbury Comics is an American comic book and music retailer based in New England. Newbury Comics began as a comic book vendor on Newbury Street in Boston. The company was founded in 1978 by Massachusetts Institute of Technology students John Brusger and Mike Dreese. Dreese also published '' Boston Rock'', a music tabloid which was active from 1980 to 1987 that focused on punk, new wave and indie bands. There are now 28 stores in five New England states: four in New Hampshire, two in Rhode Island, one in Maine, one in Connecticut, and twenty in Massachusetts. Fall Creek is a village in Eau Claire County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,315 at the 2010 census. The village is bordered by the Town of Lincoln. Indie rock is a subgenre of rock music that originated in the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand from the 1970s to the 1980s. Originally used to describe independent record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock or " guitar pop rock". One of the primary scenes of the movement was Dunedin, where a cultural scene based around a convergence of noise pop and jangle became popular among the city's large student population.
