USA Cycling
USA Cycling or USAC, based in Colorado Springs, Colorado, is the national governing body for bicycle racing in the United States. It covers the disciplines of road, track, mountain bike, cyclo-cross, and BMX across all ages and ability levels. In 2015, USAC had a membership of 61,631 individual members. Individual Pursuit
The individual pursuit is a track cycling event where two cyclists begin the race from a stationary position on opposite sides of the track. It is held at over for men and for women. The riders start at the same time and set off to complete the race distance in the fastest time. They ride on the pursuit line at the bottom of the track to find the fastest line, with each rider trying to catch the other who started on the other side. If the catch is achieved, the successful pursuer is the winner. However, they can continue the rest of the race distance to set the fastest time in a qualifying race or a record in a final. Qualification and race format The first round of the competition at major events is the qualifying round. This still involves two riders on the track at the same time but they are not directly competing against each other but attempting to set the fastest time to progress in the competition. Jennie Reed
Jennie Reed (born April 20, 1978) is a World and U.S. champion track cyclist and Olympian (2004, 2008, 2012). Jennie began track cycling at the age of 16 in Redmond, Washington. She won National titles in the match sprint and individual pursuit at her first U.S. Track Cycling National Championship in 1994. She went on to compete in the sprint disciplines at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics and the Team Pursuit in 2012. Jennie competed in 13 World Championships, 11 consecutively. She won 25 World Cup medals between the Sprint events (Sprint & Keirin) as well as the endurance events (Scratch & Team Pursuit). History In 1995 Australian Bill Mitchell, a keen cyclist and professor of economics at the University of Newcastle, created the website titled "Bill’s Cycling Racing Results and News" after finding there was a need for fast-breaking news and race results in English-speaking countries. In 1999 Sydney-based publishing company Knapp Communications purchased the website from Mitchell, and in July 2007 they sold it to British publisher Future plc for £2.2m. Tom Zirbel (born October 30, 1978) is an American former road bicycle racing cyclist, who rode professionally between 2006 and 2016 for the , and teams. Career Born in Clear Lake, Iowa, Zirbel rode for from 2006 to 2009. He came fourth in the UCI Road World Championships time trial in September 2009, and had signed to join UCI ProTour team the following season. In December 2009, a urine test taken at the United States National Time Trial Championships the previous August, in which Zirbel came second, tested positive for dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). It is considered one of the most prestigious records in cycling. Daniel Holloway (born May 21, 1987) is an American cyclist, who previously rode for American amateur team Texas Roadhouse Racing. Holloway specialized in criteriums, track racing and six-day racing. During his career, Holloway has won over 20 national titles, a Pan American title in 2018 and a gold medal at the 2019 Pan American Games. On June 2, 2021, Daniel Holloway announced his retirement from professional cycling. Team Pursuit
The team pursuit is a track cycling event similar to the individual pursuit, except that two teams, each of up to four riders, compete, starting on opposite sides of the velodrome. Race format Both men's and women's events are competed over a distance of 4 km, by a team of 4 riders. Prior to the start of the 2012–13 season the women's event was competed over a distance of 3 km, by a team of 3 riders. As with the individual pursuit, the objective is to cover the distance in the fastest time or to catch and overtake the other team in a final. Riders in a team follow each other closely in line, drafting to minimize total drag, and periodically the lead rider (who works the hardest) peels off the front, swings up the track banking and rejoins the team at the rear.
