United Nations Security Council Resolution 461
United Nations Security Council resolution 461, adopted on 31 December 1979, after recalling its Resolution 457 (1979), the council noted the increasing tension between Iran and the United States and condemned Iran for continuing to hold American hostages at the U.S. embassy in Tehran. The council also cited the International Court of Justice order to immediately release the hostages without any exceptions. The council reminded the member states against threats and the use of force in the international relations, the resolution called once again for the release of the American hostages and to allow them to leave the country. Resolution 461 reiterated the request to the Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim to lend his good offices to seeking a solution to the events and to report his efforts before the council meets again. United Nations Security Council Resolution 457, adopted unanimously on 4 December 1979, addressed the ongoing Iran hostage crisis. After expressing concern at the level of tensions between Iran and the United States as a potential threat to international security, the Council called on Iran to immediately release hostages held at the American embassy in Tehran and allow them to leave the country. The resolution reminded all Member States to respect the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, which urged countries to respect the inviolability of diplomatic personnel and the premises of their diplomatic missions. Iranian Revolution
The Iranian Revolution ( fa, انقلاب ایران, Enqelâb-e Irân, ), also known as the Islamic Revolution ( fa, انقلاب اسلامی, Enqelâb-e Eslâmī), was a series of events that culminated in the overthrow of the Pahlavi dynasty under Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, and the replacement of his government with an Islamic republic under the rule of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, a leader of one of the factions in the revolt. The revolution was supported by various leftist and Islamist organizations. After the 1953 Iranian coup d'état, Pahlavi had aligned with the United States and the Western Bloc to rule more firmly as an authoritarian monarch. He relied heavily on support from the United States to hold on to power which he held for a further 26 years. Abstention
Abstention is a term in election procedure for when a participant in a vote either does not go to vote (on election day) or, in parliamentary procedure, is present during the vote, but does not cast a ballot.
