UCC Philosophical Society
The UCC Philosophical Society, commonly known as ''the Philosoph'', is the largest debating society at University College Cork, Ireland. The Philosoph was founded in 1850, making it the oldest society at UCC. The society carries out a number of functions, including weekly debates with guest speakers, participating in debating competitions, running workshops for the students of UCC to develop their public speaking skills and running debating competitions and workshops for schoolchildren (including the Denny Schools Debating Competition). In the 1960s Seán MacBride SC and Nobel Peace Prize winner called the Philosoph "the centre of independent thought in Ireland" when discussing the state of the nation. In 1986, two Philosoph members won the World University Debating Championship at Fordham University. House meetings of the society are held every Monday evening during UCC's term time. The UCD Law Society is one of the largest student societies in Europe. Established in 1911 as 'The Legal and Economic Society', as of 2009 it had approximately 4100 members drawn from the various faculties of the university. Weekly Tuesday night debates during term are the society's core activity. Individuals who have addressed the society include President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins, former Irish Taoiseach (Prime Minister), Bertie Ahern and President of the European Council Donald Tusk. The society's motto is ''"Ar son na Córa"'' (in favour of justice). It was initially founded in 1795 as part of St. Patrick's College Maynooth and is the oldest society on campus. The Literary & Debating Society is located at the University of Galway. The society was founded as the ''Literary and Scientific Society'' in 1846, and incorporated into the then Queen's College, Galway, in 1852. The College Historical Society (CHS) – popularly referred to as The Hist – is a debating society at Trinity College Dublin. It was established within the college in 1770 and was inspired by the club formed by the philosopher Edmund Burke during his own time in Trinity in 1747. Charles Kennedy
Charles Peter Kennedy (25 November 1959 – 1 June 2015) was a British Liberal Democrat politician who served as Leader of the Liberal Democrats from 1999 to 2006, and was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ross, Skye and Lochaber from 1983 to 2015. European Universities Debating Championship
__NOTOC__ The European Universities Debating Championships (EUDC) is an annual debating tournament for teams from universities in Europe. The competition uses the British Parliamentary Debate format (the same debate format used at the World Universities Debating Championship). The championships as they are known today were first held in Rotterdam, Netherlands at Erasmus University from 8–11 April 1999. Subsequent tournaments were held at a similar time of year until Koc EUDC in 2007 when the tournament shifted to the late summer in order to accommodate all university examination periods across the continent. The competition has also become longer to accommodate the growth of the event. The competition in 1999 involved 32 teams of two speakers, but has now grown to involve up to 200 teams each year.
