Uskside Foundry in Newport, Wales was the home of Uskside Engineering, or Uskside Engineering and Rivet Co. Ltd. Gwent Archives holds records for the company from 1889 to 1974. In 1889 Uskside Engineering & Rivet Co. Ltd. supplied the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad Company of the United States of America with "Stevens Improved Patent Fuel Presses", also known as Stevens underground engines. Newport, Wales
Newport ( cy, Casnewydd; ) is a city and county borough in Wales, situated on the River Usk close to its confluence with the Severn Estuary, northeast of Cardiff. Gwent Archives (Welsh: ''Archifau Gwent'') is the local records office and genealogy centre, based in Ebbw Vale, South Wales for the historic county of Monmouthshire. It covers the modern local authority areas of Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly County Borough, Monmouthshire, Newport and Torfaen. Background Monmouthshire Record Office was established in 1938 at the Shire Hall in Newport. Following local government reorganisation in 1974, it became the Gwent County Record Office and moved to the newly built County Hall in Cwmbran. In October 2011 the record office moved from Cwmbran to a newly developed site in Ebbw Vale and was renamed Gwent Archives. Location The Gwent Archives are housed in the Grade II* listed office buildings of Ebbw Vale Steelworks. John Hughes (businessman)
John James Hughes (1814 – 17 June 1889) was a Welsh engineer, businessman and founder of the city of Donetsk. The village was originally named Yuzovka (''Hughesovka'', russian: Юзoвка) after Hughes, (" Yu z" being a Russian approximation of Hughes), formally becoming a town in May 1917 and later, in 1924, being renamed to Stalino ( uk, Сталіно); in 1961, the name was changed to Donetsk. Biography Hughes was born in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales, where his father was head engineer at the Cyfarthfa Ironworks. It was there that Hughes started his career, under his father's supervision. He then moved to Ebbw Vale, before joining the Uskside Foundry in Newport, Monmouthshire, in the 1840s. It was here that Hughes made his reputation and fortune, patenting a number of inventions in armaments and armour plating.
