''Underwater People'' is the second album by The Samples. It contained live material, demos, unreleased songs, and alternate versions. It was released on November 30, 1991, and re-released by What Are Records? in 1992. Critical reception '' MusicHound Rock: The Essential Album Guide'' called the album the band's best, writing that it "rises above the rest with lots of energetic reggae rhythms and more consistent songwriting." The Samples
The Samples is an American rock band formed in Boulder, Colorado in 1987. The band's name came from the members' early sustenance of food samples from the local grocery store. The music has been described as "reggae influenced rock/pop" and a cross between The Police and the Grateful Dead. The founding members were Sean Kelly (Guitar/Vocals), Charles Hambleton (Guitar), Andy Sheldon (Bass/Vocals), Jeep MacNichol (Drums/Vocals), and Al Laughlin (Keyboards/Vocals). History Singer/songwriter Sean Kelly and guitarist Charles Hambleton met in 1985 in Burlington, Vermont at an open mic called The Sheik, leading to the formation of the band Secret City in 1986. Jam Rock
A jam band is a musical group whose concerts (and live album, live albums) are characterized by lengthy improvisational "jam session, jams." These include extended musical improvisation over rhythmic groove (music), grooves and vamp (music), chord patterns, and long sets of music which often cross genre boundaries. Most jam band sets will consist of variations on songs that have already been released as studio recordings. Jam bands are known for having a very fluid structure, often having one song lead into another without any interruption. The jam-band musical style, spawned from the psychedelic rock movement of the 1960s, was a feature of nationally famed groups such as the Grateful Dead and The Allman Brothers Band, whose regular touring schedules continued into the 1990s. Reggae
Reggae () is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1960s. The term also denotes the modern popular music of Jamaica and its diaspora. A 1968 single by Toots and the Maytals, "Do the Reggay" was the first popular song to use the word "reggae", effectively naming the genre and introducing it to a global audience. Jazz Fusion
Jazz fusion (also known as fusion and progressive jazz) is a music genre that developed in the late 1960s when musicians combined jazz harmony and improvisation with rock music, funk, and rhythm and blues. Electric guitars, amplifiers, and keyboards that were popular in rock and roll started to be used by jazz musicians, particularly those who had grown up listening to rock and roll. Jazz fusion arrangements vary in complexity. Some employ groove-based vamps fixed to a single key or a single chord with a simple, repeated melody. Others use elaborate chord progressions, unconventional time signatures, or melodies with counter-melodies. ''No Room'' is an album by the Boulder, Colorado, band the Samples, released in 1992. Prior to recording the album, the band left Arista Records to regain control of their musical direction. The Samples supported the album with a North American tour; they also played the 1993 H.O.R.D.E. festival. They wrote and tested the songs while touring their previous album. ''No Room'' sold almost 80,000 copies in its first nine months of release; it had topped more than 150,000 copies by 1998. Critical reception The ''Chicago Tribune'' noted the "crystalline production, bubbling keyboard arrangements, snaky guitar lines and a tight, syncopated rhythm section." Branford Marsalis (born August 26, 1960) is an American saxophonist, composer, and bandleader. While primarily known for his work in jazz as the leader of the Branford Marsalis Quartet, he also performs frequently as a soloist with classical ensembles and has led the group Buckshot LeFonque.
