Ulzana
Ulzana ( – 1909, also known as Josanni, Jolsanie or Ozaní’ – ″Tanned buckskin″ or Bį-sópàn – ″Big Buckskin″), was a Tsokanende Apache war chief, brother of Chihuahua. Biography Both the brothers were loyal and warlike supporters and lieutenants of Cochise. Ulzana is best known for leading a raid in 1885 (which inspired the film '' Ulzana's Raid'' (1972)) through Arizona and New Mexico with only 11 Mogollon warriors, riding 1200 miles, killing 36 Pindah and Mexicans, terrifying settlers, cowboys and miners, stealing stock, and making fun of 2000 soldiers. He lost only one warrior, killed by San Carlos Apache, and went safely to Mexico in the last days of December. Ulzana surrendered, along with his brother Chihuahua and old Nana, on 3 March 1886, when 77 Apache (15 warriors, 33 women, and 29 children) made their entrance into Fort Bowie. Ulzana's Raid
''Ulzana's Raid'' is a 1972 American revisionist Western film starring Burt Lancaster, Richard Jaeckel, Bruce Davison, and Joaquin Martinez. Filmed on location in Arizona, it was directed by Robert Aldrich based on a script by Alan Sharp. It portrays a brutal raid by Chiricahua Apaches against European settlers in 1880s Arizona. Plot Following mistreatment by Indian agency authorities, Ulzana breaks out of the San Carlos Indian Reservation with a small Chiricahua war party. When news reaches Fort Lowell, the commanding officer sends riders out to alert the local settlers, but both troopers are ambushed separately; one is dragged away, while the other kills the European woman he is escorting and then himself. ''Ulzana'' is a 1974 western film directed by Gottfried Kolditz and starring Gojko Mitic as Ulzana, Renate Blume and Rolf Hoppe. It is a Red Western, made as a co-production between East Germany, Romania and the Soviet Union. Synopsis After the events of Apachen (1973), the film is set in Arizona, during the 19th century, and depicts the struggle for independence of an Indian tribe (the Mimbreno Appacheans) led by war chief Ulzana against captain Burton, a corrupt army officer who lusts after Ulzana's wife, and has been hired by White American merchants to expel the Indians from the land. Chiricahua People
Chiricahua ( ) is a band of Apache Native Americans. Based in the Southern Plains and Southwestern United States, the Chiricahua historically shared a common area, language, customs, and intertwined family relations with their fellow Apaches. At the time of European contact, they had a territory of in Southwestern New Mexico and Southeastern Arizona in the United States and in Northern Sonora and Chihuahua in Mexico. Gojko Mitić
Gojko Mitić ( sr-Cyrl, Гојко Митић; born June 13, 1940) is a Serbian-German actor and director. He gained great popularity in East Germany for his portrayal of historical and fictional Native American characters in numerous DEFA Indian films. His popularity may stem from the fact that both in East Germany and later in West Germany attempts were made to attach labels to him: "DEFA bosses" on the one hand, "Winnetou of the East" on the other. However, Mitić never portrayed the latter role in a film, although he did later at the Karl May Festival in Bad Segeberg. This Winnetou formulation refers more to the popularity of Mitić compared to the actor of the role from the West, the Frenchman Pierre Brice. Chihuahua (chief)
Chihuahua or Chewawa, ( 1822/1825 – 25 July 1901), was chief of the Chokonen local group of the Tsokanende Band of Chiricahua Apache who carried out several raids on settlers in Arizona in the 1870s and 1880s. His elder brother Ulzana ( 1821–1909), who would later become known as leader of a very famous raid through New Mexico and Arizona in 1885, was his war chief (segundo). Chihuahua's name in the Mescalero-Chiricahua language was Kla-esh or Tłá'í'ez ("To push something under something else with your foot"). Fort Bowie
Fort Bowie was a 19th-century outpost of the United States Army located in southeastern Arizona near the present day town of Willcox, Arizona. The remaining buildings and site are now protected as Fort Bowie National Historic Site. Fort Bowie was established by the California Volunteers in 1862, after a series of engagements between the California Column and the Chiricahua Apaches. The most violent of these conflicts was the Battle of Apache Pass in July 1862. The fort was named in honor of Colonel George Washington Bowie commander of the 5th Regiment California Volunteer Infantry who first established the fort. The first Fort Bowie resembled a temporary camp rather than a permanent army post. Nana (chief)
Kas-tziden ("Broken Foot") or Haškɛnadɨltla ("Angry, He is Agitated"), more widely known by his Mexican-Spanish appellation Nana ("grandma" or "lullaby") (c. 1810 – May 19, 1896), was a warrior and chief of the Chihenne band (better known as ''Warm Springs Apache'') of the Chiricahua Apache.
