USATF Distance Classic
The USATF Distance Classic is an annual track and field meeting in Eagle Rock, Los Angeles, California, hosted at the Occidental College track facility. Before 2015, it was called the USATF High Performance Distance Classic, and in 2015 and 2016 the meet was renamed to the HOKA ONE ONE Middle Distance Classic as per sponsorship from Hoka One One before going back to USATF Distance Classic in 2017. For short, the meet is frequently referred to as just Oxy. The Nike Oregon Project was a group created by the American corporation Nike, established in Beaverton, Oregon in 2001. The team folded on October 10, 2019 after an investigation resulted in a four-year ban of longtime coach Alberto Salazar. Facilities The runners lived in the Portland, Oregon area and trained at Nike's headquarters campus located just outside the Portland suburb of Beaverton, Oregon. Some of the runners in the group lived in a specially designed house where filters were used to remove oxygen from the air to simulate living at high elevation. The Bowerman Track Club (BTC) is an American training group sponsored by Nike, Inc. The Oregon Track Club (OTC) is an American running organization based in Eugene, Oregon. History Emerald Empire Athletic Association Formed by Bill Bowerman, the Emerald Empire Athletic Association (EEAA) was the predecessor to the Oregon Track Club. In 1948, Bill Bowerman became the assistant track coach at the University of Oregon, in Eugene, Oregon. In order to spur interest in running with the local community, Bowerman formed an all comers meet for grade-schoolers in 1949. The next year the meet was expanded to include high school and college athletes. The low turnout of the all comers meet caused Bowerman to want to increase his efforts in promoting track and field in Eugene.
