U.S. 43d Infantry Division
The 43rd Infantry Division was a formation of the United States Army from 1920 to 1963, serving in the Pacific during World War II. It was activated in 1920 as a National Guard Division in Connecticut, Maine, Rhode Island, and Vermont. The 143rd Regional Support Group of the Connecticut National Guard now carries on the heritage. Creation and interwar period The 1920 amendments to the National Defense Act of 1916 provided for eighteen National Guard divisions. Seventeen National Guard divisions had served in the First World War; the 42nd "Rainbow" Division was not reconstituted after the war, and the 39th "Delta" Division was eliminated from the force structure in 1923 by being renamed the 31st Division. Infantry, or infantryman are a type of soldier who specialize in ground combat, typically fighting dismounted. Historically the term was used to describe foot soldiers, i.e. those who march and fight on foot. 103rd Infantry Regiment (United States)
The 103rd Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment of the United States Army that served in combat in the American Civil War, World War I, and World War II. It was an Army National Guard regiment from the states making up New England, but most of its soldiers came from Maine. It was a part of the 26th Infantry Division and the 43rd Infantry Division. During the Cold War, the regiment was converted into an armored regiment, and its lineage is presently perpetuated by an engineer battalion in the Maine Army National Guard. 172nd Cavalry Regiment
The 172nd Cavalry Regiment is an armored cavalry regiment of the Vermont Army National Guard, with one battalion currently active. First organized in 1861, the regiment has seen combat in the American Civil War, World War I, World War II, and the War on Terror. Originally an infantry regiment, elements of the unit were consolidated with an antiaircraft unit in 1959 and converted into an armored regiment. In 1964, the remainder of the 172nd Infantry was consolidated with the 172nd Armor, as an armored regiment. In 2007, elements became an armored cavalry regiment. 86th Infantry Brigade Combat Team
The 86th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Mountain) ("The Vermont Brigade") is an Army National Guard light infantry brigade headquartered in Vermont. It was reorganized from an armored brigade into an Infantry Brigade Combat Team (IBCT) as part of the United States Army's transformation for the 21st century. The 86th IBCT utilizes the Army Mountain Warfare School, co-located at Ethan Allen Firing Range in Jericho, Vermont, to train in individual military mountaineering skills so the entire brigade can be skilled in such warfare. This large conventional unit level mountain warfare capability had been lost when the 10th Mountain Division (United States), 10th Mountain Division deactivated after World War II. 169th Infantry Regiment (United States)
The 169th Infantry Regiment is an infantry regiment of the United States Army and Connecticut National Guard. The regiment may be traced to English train bands that formed in settlements of Windsor, Hartford, and Wethersfield as these settlements consolidated from 1633 to 1636 and deployed during the Pequot War from 1636 to 1638. As the settlements in what would become Hartford County grew, the militia was reorganized for drill in 1672 essentially into a county regiment. The U.S. Army recognizes the regiment from its reorganization by an act of the Connecticut Assembly on 11 October 1739 as the 1st Connecticut Regiment. It is Connecticut's oldest regiment when considered from its formation of train bands in 1633 to 1636 in Windsor, Hartford, and Wethersfield. The 102nd Infantry Regiment currently consists of one battalion in the Connecticut National Guard. In the modern U.S. Army regimental system, regimental designation is used only in historical tradition, and there is no regimental headquarters or staff. It is one of several National Guard units with colonial roots. The 1st Battalion, 102nd Regiment is headquartered in New Haven, Connecticut. Its mascot is Sergeant Stubby. I Corps (United States)
The I Corps is a corps of the United States Army headquartered in Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. It is a major formation of United States Army Pacific (USARPAC) and its current mission involves administrative oversight of army units in the Asia-Pacific region, including the Pacific Pathways program. Activated in World War I in France, the I Corps oversaw US Army divisions as they repelled several major German offensives and advanced into Germany. The 26th Infantry Division was an infantry division (military), division of the United States Army. A major formation of the Massachusetts Army National Guard, it was based in Boston, Massachusetts for most of its history. Today, the division's heritage is carried on by the 26th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade. The 45th Infantry Division was an infantry Division (military), division of the United States Army, most associated with the Oklahoma Army National Guard, from 1920 to 1968.
