The University of the Philippines Manila (UPM) is a state-funded medical and research university located in Ermita, Manila, Philippines. It is known for being the country's center of excellence in the health sciences, including health professional education, training, and research. It is the oldest of eight constituent universities of the University of the Philippines System, even predating the founding of UP by three years. Originally established on December 1, 1905, as the Philippine Medical School and later called as the UP College of Medicine and Surgery on June 10, 1907. It was renamed as University of the Philippines Manila in 1983. UP Manila administers and operates the Philippine General Hospital, the largest medical center and the national referral center for health in the Philippines. Pedro Gil Street
Pedro Gil Street (formerly Herran Street) is an east-west inner city street and a tertiary national road in south-central Manila, Philippines. It is long and spans the entire length of Ermita, Malate, Paco and Santa Ana districts, as well as portions of San Andres and Pandacan. The street originates at the intersection with Calderon Street fronting the Santa Ana Church in Santa Ana district where it is divided by a median of greenery and sculptures known as Plaza Felipe Calderon. Heading west, it passes by the Santa Ana Market before it narrows into a four-lane undivided road west of Suter Street. Continuing past old heritage houses and a few commercial establishments, Pedro Gil crosses into the northern portion of San Andres and Paco districts where it is interrupted by the Paco railway station and busy Quirino Avenue. Philippine Assembly
The Philippine Assembly (sometimes called the Philippine National Assembly) was the lower house of the Philippine Legislature from 1907 to 1916, when it was renamed the House of Representatives of the Philippines. The Philippine Assembly was the first national legislative body fully chosen by elections. The Assembly was created by the 1902 Philippine Organic Act of the United States Congress, which established the Insular Government of the Philippines. Along with an upper house (the appointed Philippine Commission), it formed the bicameral Philippine Legislature during the American colonial period. In 1916, the Jones Act replaced the Philippine Organic Act and the Assembly became the current House of Representatives of the Philippines. Bonifacio Drive
Bonifacio Drive is a road running for approximately in a north-south direction between Intramuros and Port Area in Manila, Philippines. The boulevard is also designated as Radial Road 1 (R-1) of Manila's arterial road network, National Route 120 (N120) of the Philippine highway network and an auxiliary route of Asian Highway 26 (AH26). The boulevard is named for national hero Andrés Bonifacio, the ''Supremo'' of the Katipunan and thus the father of the 1896 Philippine Revolution against the Spanish Empire. Another street in Manila is also named Bonifacio Drive. It is located at the Tutuban Center shopping complex in Tondo. History The road was previously called Malecon Drive during the American period.
