Town, Merthyr Tydfil
Town is the name of a local government community and electoral ward in the town of Merthyr Tydfil, in Merthyr Tydfil County Borough, Wales. Description The Town community covers Merthyr Tydfil town centre east of the River Taff, stretching as far as Merthyr Common and the border with Caerphilly County Borough. It includes the residential areas of Cae-draw, Penyard, Penyrheol, Thomastown, Twynyrodyn and Ysgubor Newydd. The community of Troed-y-rhiw borders to the south, Cyfarthfa to the west, Park, Penydarren and Dowlais to the north and the Caerphilly community of Darran Valley to the east. According to the 2011 UK Census the population of the community/ward was 7,671. As well as the High Street and town centre the community includes Merthyr Tydfil railway station and Merthyr Tydfil bus station. A community ( cy, cymuned) is a division of land in Wales that forms the lowest tier of local government in Wales. Welsh communities are analogous to civil parishes in England. There are 878 communities in Wales. History Until 1974 Wales was divided into civil parishes. These were abolished by section 20 (6) of the Local Government Act 1972, and replaced by communities by section 27 of the same Act. The principal areas of Wales are divided entirely into communities. Unlike in England, where unparished areas exist, no part of Wales is outside a community, even in urban areas. Most, but not all, communities are administered by community councils, which are equivalent to English parish councils in terms of their powers and the way they operate. Dowlais () is a village and community of the county borough of Merthyr Tydfil, in Wales. At the 2011 census the electoral ward had a population of 6,926, The population of the Community being 4,270 at the 2011 census having excluded Pant. Dowlais is notable within Wales and Britain for its historic association with ironworking; once employing, through the Dowlais Iron Company, roughly 5,000 people, the works being the largest in the world at one stage. Name The name is derived from the Welsh ''du'' meaning 'black' and ''glais'' meaning 'stream'. History Dowlais came to prominence in the 18th and 19th centuries because of its iron and steelworks. Media Wales Ltd. is a publishing company based in Cardiff, Wales. As of 2009 it was owned by Reach plc (formerly known as the Trinity Mirror Group). It was previously known as the Western Mail & Echo Ltd. History The ''Western Mail'' was founded in 1869 by the 3rd Marquess of Bute as a Conservative newspaper. Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council ( cy, Cyngor bwrdeistref Sirol Merthyr Tudful) is the governing body for Merthyr Tydfil County Borough, one of the Principal Areas of Wales. History The parish of Merthyr Tydfil was governed by a local board from 1850 until 1894, when it was replaced by an urban district council. The urban district was incorporated as a borough in 1905, creating the first Merthyr Tydfil Borough Council. In 1908 it became a county borough, making it independent from Glamorgan County Council. Cyfarthfa High School is a comprehensive school, based in Merthyr Tydfil County Borough, Wales, that was established in 1970. Cyfarthfa means "Place of the barking (dog)" in Welsh and the school crest reflects this. Origins The school was formed by the amalgamation of Cyfarthfa Castle Grammar School and Georgetown Secondary Modern School. Cyfarthfa Grammar School, opened in 1913, was based in Cyfarthfa Castle operating as separate boys' and girls' schools. The Church in Wales ( cy, Yr Eglwys yng Nghymru) is an Anglican church in Wales, composed of six dioceses. The Archbishop of Wales does not have a fixed archiepiscopal see, but serves concurrently as one of the six diocesan bishops. Merthyr Tydfil bus station is the bus station that serves the town of Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales. There are 14 stands and the main operator at the station is Stagecoach South Wales. NAT Group and First Call Travel also run services from Merthyr Tydfil bus station. The former bus station closed and was demolished for development. History The original bus station dates from the 1960s, designed with two curving sections to give direct access to the adjacent modern shopping centre development.
