Toots And The Maytals
The Maytals, known from 1972 to 2020 as Toots and the Maytals, are a Jamaican musical group, one of the best known ska and rocksteady vocal groups. The Maytals were formed in the early 1960s and were key figures in popularizing reggae music. Frontman Toots Hibbert, who died in 2020, was considered a reggae pioneer on par with Bob Marley. His soulful vocal style was compared to Otis Redding, and led him to be named by ''Rolling Stone'' as one of the 100 Greatest Singers. After Hibbert's death, the Maytals indicated that they would continue as a working group. Their 1968 single "Do the Reggay" was the first song to use the word " reggae", coining the name of the genre and introducing it to a global audience. Adalbert Toots (12 March 1910 – 25 August 1948) was an Estonian wrestler. He competed in the men's freestyle lightweight at the 1936 Summer Olympics. Aleksander Toots
Aleksander Toots (born 1969 in Kohtla-Järve) is the deputy director of Estonia's counterintelligence service Estonian Internal Security Service, also known as KAPO. He started his career in Ida-Viru police precinct. Since 1993 he has held different positions in KAPO. He was the chief of Virumaa department since 2002. In March 2008, he became the deputy chief of the Estonian Security Police. He has graduated from Paikuse police school, Estonian Academy of Security Sciences in Nomme and the Police College. Aleksander Toots is considered to be the best counterintelligence specialist in Estonia. He is the chief architect behind apprehending traitor Herman Simm. He has also orchestrated the capture of KAPO officers Aleksei Dressen and Indrek Põder. He was made deputy chief of service by current chief Raivo Aeg. Arved Toots
Arved Toots (17 September 1930 – 18 January 1992) was an Estonian agronomist and breeder of Tori horses. Early life and career Arved Toots was born near Aravete in Kantküla, Albu Parish, into a farming family. He received his basic education at the Aravete school. From 1946 to 1949 he studied at the Jäneda Agricultural School, graduating as an agronomist. He began his career in 1949 as an agronomist at the machine-tractor station in Ambla. In 1955 he moved to be an agronomist at the collective farm "Murrang" (renamed in 1958 as the Aravete collective farm). In February 1970 he became the department head at the Aravete collective farm, a position he held until his retirement on 1 January 1992. He was also head of the Aravete Tori horse farm from 1955 to 1992 as well as being a long-term member of the board of the Horse Breeding Council in Estonia. Villu Toots (August 24, 1916 – April 10, 1993) was an internationally known Estonian calligrapher, book designer, educator, palaeographer and author. Biography Early life Villu Toots was born on August 24, 1916 in Reval, Russian Empire (now Tallinn, Estonia). He was the first child of Karl Johannes and Amalie Toots (''née'' Jaas). The family was originally from Tartu and moved back home, when Toots was one and a half years old. His father was a shoemaker and his mother was a housewife, but earned money as a seamstress. Toots started school at Tartu Commercial School. Luckily for him, the curriculum also included penmanship. There Toots gained his first knowledge about formal and casual scripts from artist Eduard Ahas. He also got advice from Hando Mugasto, who was an artist from the prestigious Pallas Art School. ''The Bash Street Kids'' is a comic strip in the British comic magazine '' The Beano''. It also appeared briefly in The Wizard as series of prose stories in 1955. The strip, created by Leo Baxendale as ''When the Bell Rings'', first appeared in issue 604 (dated February 1954). It became ''The Bash Street Kids'' in 1956 and has become a regular feature, appearing in every issue. Since 1961, David Sutherland has drawn about 2,100 strips. ''Toots and Casper'' is a family comic strip by Jimmy Murphy, distributed to newspapers for 37 years by King Features Syndicate, from December 17, 1918 to December 30, 1956. The strip spawned many merchandising tie-ins, including books, dolls, paper dolls, pins, bisque nodders and comic books. Oskar Luts ( – 23 March 1953) was an Estonian writer and playwright. Biography Oskar Luts was born into a middle-class family in Järvepera, central Estonia, at that time in the governorate of Livonia (Russian Empire). His younger brother was the film director and cinematographer Theodor Luts. He attended Änkküla village school in 1894. He went to Palamuse Parish parish school in Jõgeva County, attending from 1895–1899. From 1899–1902 he studied at the Tartu Reaalkool. In 1903 Luts started working as an apothecary apprentice in Tartu and Narva. After passing the apothecary apprentice exams, he went to work in Tallinn (1903). During his military service in Saint Petersburg (1909–1911) he also worked in the apothecary field. He continued this work in Dorpat while studying pharmacy at university. At 18, he relocated from South Philadelphia to New York and became a speakeasy bouncer.
