Tong (ward)
Tong (population 17,069 - 2001 UK census) is a ward within the City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council, West Yorkshire, England, named after Tong village which is its oldest settlement. The population at the 2011 Census was 20,608. Geography The ward is in the extreme south-east of Bradford District in a green wedge of land between the urban areas of Bradford and Leeds, the centre of the former being to the north-west and the centre of the latter being about to the north-east. Although surrounded by Green Belt, most of the settlements nearest to Tong are urban in character, Tong Street being to the west of the village, Drighlington to the south, Gildersome, to the south-east and New Farnley to the east (distances from the boundaries of the ward). The rural village of Bankhouse and the Moravian settlement of Fulneck in Pudsey are about to the north of Tong with Cockersdale to the south-east. City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council is the local authority of the City of Bradford in West Yorkshire, England. It is a metropolitan district council, one of five in West Yorkshire and one of 36 in the metropolitan counties of England, and provides the majority of local government services in Bradford. Since 1 April 2014 it has been a constituent council of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority. Oakenshaw, West Yorkshire
Oakenshaw is a village located in both the City of Bradford and Kirklees in West Yorkshire, England. It is located midway between the town of Cleckheaton in Kirklees and the suburb of Wyke in Bradford. The village is close to the M606 motorway. The village's main shopping centre is on Bradford Road and its main church, dedicated to St Andrew, is a grade II listed building. Transport The village is served by Low Moor railway station on the Calder Valley line with services to Leeds, Bradford Interchange and Manchester Victoria. Another line serving the village was the Spen Valley Line which ran from Low Moor to Mirfield via Cleckheaton and Heckmondwike. Another branch of the line connected to Dewsbury but this line closed in 1965 to all traffic. It is now the Spen Valley Greenway. Tyersal
Tyersal is a village east of Bradford and west of Leeds and has a population of 2,605 according to Bradford Community Statistics Project. The district is split between both City of Bradford metropolitan borough and the City of Leeds metropolitan borough, with east Tyersal sitting in the Pudsey ward of Leeds City Council. Tyersal joined Bradford in 1882 and part of it became part of the Leeds metropolitan district in 1974. Shops On Tyersal Road there are six shops, including a Newsagents, Pharmacy, Sandwich shop, mortgage brokers and a Takeaway. Transport Currently there is the 630 service, operated by First Bradford, which terminates at the top. Holme Wood
Holme Wood (sometimes written as Holmewood) is a housing estate in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. Geography and administration Holme Wood is situated off Wakefield Road in the south-east of the City of Bradford and borders Tyersal. It is part of Tong ward. The estate is managed by Incommunities and Bradford Council. In 1996, it was one of the largest council-housing estates in West Yorkshire. Most of it consists of low-rise buildings, there are only two tall blocks of flats, namely Ogden House and Kelvin House on Dane Court Road. The estate is rambling; however, there are many pleasant green areas dotted around the estate, among them Valley Natural Play Park along the upper course of Holme Beck and Pit Hill Park at the boundary to the nearby village of Tong in the green belt. Bierley is a former township in the West Riding of Yorkshire whose name now mainly refers to a neighbourhood in the Tong ward of the City of Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. Geography Bierley housing estate is situated about southeast of the centre of Bradford, south of the A650 road and the A6036 road. Dudley Hill is a village in the borough of City of Bradford, West Yorkshire, England and is in Tong ward. History There are a few mentions of the name Dudley Hill prior to the industrial revolution. Religious history John Wesley (1703–1791) visited Dudley Hill in 1744. The Wesleyan Sunday School opened in 1816, the Wesleyan Chapel in 1823 and the Ebenezer Primitive Methodists Chapel opened in 1833 and in 1861 Salem Chapel opened on Sticker Lane.
