Tomislav (, ) is a masculine given name of Slavs, Slavic origin, that is widespread amongst the South Slavs. The meaning of the name ''Tomislav'' is thought to have derived from the Old Church Slavonic, Old Slavonic verb "''wikt:томити#Old East Slavic, tomiti''" or "''wikt:томить, tomit'''" meaning to "''languish''", "''torture''" or "''struggle''", combined with "''slava"'' meaning glory. Other origin theories suggest the name is a variant derived from the New Testament Thomas the Apostle, Apostle Thomas, whilst another theory postulates that it is a Slavicisation, Slavicised corruption of the Dog Latin, (Dog) Latin "''Dominus Slavus''". The first recorded bearer of the name was the 10th-century King Tomislav of Croatia, for this reason it has become popular amongst Croats. Old Church Slavonic or Old Slavonic () was the first Slavic literary language. Historians credit the 9th-century Byzantine missionaries Saints Cyril and Methodius with standardizing the language and using it in translating the Bible and other Ancient Greek ecclesiastical texts as part of the Christianization of the Slavs. It is thought to have been based primarily on the dialect of the 9th-century Byzantine Slavs living in the Province of Thessalonica (in present-day Greece). Old Church Slavonic played an important role in the history of the Slavic languages and served as a basis and model for later Church Slavonic traditions, and some Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholic churches use this later Church Slavonic as a liturgical language to this day.
