Thomas English (mayor)
Thomas English (9 July 1820 – 17 December 1884) was a leading colonial architect in South Australia, Mayor of Adelaide (1862–1863), and a member of the South Australian Legislative Council 1865–1878 and 1882–1884. English was born in Maryport, Cumberland, England, and arrived in Adelaide on 11 January 1850 on the barque ''Richardson''. English was Minister of Works, South Australia, and a member of the South Australian Legislative Council from 1 March 1865 to 1 August 1878 and from 29 May 1882 till his death, and was Commissioner of Public Works in the John Hart Government from 23 October 1865 to March 1966, and in the James Boucaut Ministry from the latter date till 3 May 1867. His work as architect included the new Kent Town Brewery buildings at the corner of Rundle Street and Dequetteville Terrace, Kent Town, completed in 1876 for E. T. Smith. Thomas Dunn English
Thomas Dunn English (June 29, 1819 – April 1, 1902) was an American Democratic Party politician from New Jersey who represented the state's 6th congressional district in the House of Representatives from 1891 to 1895. He was also a published author and songwriter, who had a bitter feud with Edgar Allan Poe. Along with Waitman T. Barbe and Danske Dandridge, English was considered a major West Virginia poet of the mid 19th century. Biography English was born in Philadelphia on June 29, 1819. He attended the Friends Academy in Burlington, New Jersey, and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1839. His graduation thesis was on phrenology. He studied law, and was admitted to the Philadelphia bar in 1842. He was a founding member of the American Numismatic Society in 1858. Thomas Steven English (born 18 October 1961) is an English former professional footballer, most notably for Coventry City, Leicester City and Colchester United. Between 1979 and 1990 he made 174 appearances in the Football League, scoring 42 league goals. Biography English was born in Cirencester, Gloucestershire and attended school in Colchester, Essex. He began his career as an apprentice at Coventry City. After making 66 league appearances for Coventry, scoring seventeen times, he signed for Leicester City in 1982. After being released in 1984, he made a handful of appearances for Rochdale and Plymouth Argyle as a non-contract player, before signing for Colchester United in 1985. Thomas English (1960 – 31 October 2000), usually known as Tommy English, was an Ulster loyalist paramilitary and politician. He served as a commander in the Ulster Defence Association (UDA) and was killed by members of the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) as part of a violent loyalist feud between the two organisations. English had also been noted as a leading figure in the Ulster Democratic Party (UDP) during the early years of the Northern Ireland peace process. Thomas English (1819 – April 11, 1868) was an African-American sailor in the U.S. Navy during the American Civil War. He received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Second Battle of Fort Fisher on January 15, 1865. Military service A free black man, English joined the Navy at age 43, for a 3-year enlistment, and was assigned to the Union ironclad . His enlistment is credited to the state of New York. Having long served the Navy before the Ft Fisher action, English had risen to the rank of Signal Quartermaster aboard the most powerful Ironclad warship of the Navy, perhaps the highest ranked African American enlisted man in the US Navy at that time. Tom English (born 8 March 1993) is an Australian rugby player, currently playing with the Melbourne Rebels in the Super Rugby. English plays as a centre, however, he can play on the wing.
