Tocotronic is a German rock band founded in 1993 (see 1993 in music). Similar to Blumfeld or Die Sterne they are considered a part of the Hamburger Schule (''Hamburg School'') movement. They are influential for bands such as Wir sind Helden. Tocotronic were signed by L'Age D'Or, a German independent record label situated in Hamburg, in 1994 after quickly gaining popularity in the local scene. Their early style consists of ironic sloganeering ("I want to be part of a youth movement") and almost diary-like songwriting, paired with a lo-fi rock sound with elements of punk rock and grunge. In 1995, they released their debut album ''Digital ist besser'' (Digital is better), followed by their second album ''Nach der verlorenen Zeit'' (After the Lost Time) only a few months later. Their third album, released in 1996, was the first to hit the German charts. Dirk Von Lowtzow
Dirk von Lowtzow (born 21 March 1971) is a German musician. He has been the singer and guitarist with German rock band Tocotronic since 1994. Since 2001 he has also been active with the German electronic music project . In 1997, he took part in the compilation disc ''Musik für junge Leute'' with the song ''Charlotte'', which refers to a L'Âge d'or label employee by that name. Hamburger Schule
The ''Hamburger Schule'' (German language, German for 'Hamburg School') is a music movement current in Germany during the 1980s and early 1990s. With some active bands and artists it is still present. It took up traditions of Neue Deutsche Welle and combined them with elements of indie rock, Punk music, punk, grunge, experimental Pop music, pop, and intellectual lyrics. It established new grounds for the use of German language in pop music. Introduction As the name indicates, the movement was initially carried by Hamburg based bands like , Kolossale Jugend, Ostzonensuppenwürfelmachenkrebs, Die Erde, Blumfeld, Selig (band), Selig, Tocotronic, Die Sterne, , and Die Goldenen Zitronen. Lo-fi (also typeset as lofi or low-fi; short for low fidelity) is a music or production quality in which elements usually regarded as imperfections in the context of a recording or performance are present, sometimes as a deliberate choice. The standards of sound quality (fidelity) and music production have evolved throughout the decades, meaning that some older examples of lo-fi may not have been originally recognized as such. Pavement (band)
Pavement is an American indie rock band that formed in Stockton, California, in 1989. For most of their career, the group consisted of Stephen Malkmus (vocals and guitar), Scott Kannberg (guitar and vocals), Mark Ibold (bass), Steve West (drums) and Bob Nastanovich (percussion and vocals). Initially conceived as a recording project, the band at first avoided press or live performances, while attracting considerable underground attention with their early releases. Gradually evolving into a more polished band, Pavement recorded five full-length albums and ten EPs over the course of their decade-long career, though they disbanded with some acrimony in 1999 as the members moved on to other projects.
