The Return Of The Soldier (film)
''The Return of the Soldier'' is a 1982 British drama film starring Alan Bates as Baldry and co-starring Julie Christie, Ian Holm, Glenda Jackson, and Ann-Margret about a shell-shocked officer's return from the First World War. It was directed by Alan Bridges and written by Hugh Whitemore based on the 1918 novel of the same name by Rebecca West. The film was entered into the 1982 Cannes Film Festival. The film was the first to be given a PG certificate by the British Board of Film Classification. Plot In 1914, a group of British soldiers is preparing to leave England to fight in the Western Front in France, led by Captain Chris Baldry. He appears at one final farewell party thrown by his wife, Kitty, appearing withdrawn and distant throughout. The story moves on to 1916. Alan Bridges
Alan Bridges (28 September 1927 – 7 December 2013) was an English film and television director. In 1967 Bridges directed a television adaptation of Charles Dickens' '' Great Expectations'' starring Gary Bond as Pip. He won the '' Grand Prix'' at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival for his film ''The Hireling''. His film '' Out of Season'' (1975) was entered into the 25th Berlin International Film Festival and film ''The Shooting Party'' (1985) was entered into the 14th Moscow International Film Festival. For television, Bridges directed several works by David Mercer and Dennis Potter. Hilary Lavender Mason (4 September 1917 – 5 September 2006) was an English character actress who appeared in a wide variety of roles, mainly on UK television.
