The Outsider (play)
''The Outsider'' is a play by the British writer Dorothy Brandon. It portrays the struggle of an unorthodox medical practitioner to gain acceptance by the medical establishment. It was subsequently revised to show the unconventional triumphing over the conventional, whereas the play had originally had the opposite ending. It premiered at the Pleasure Gardens Theatre in Folkestone in April 1923, before transferring to the St James's Theatre for a West End run lasting for 107 performances between May and September the same year. The cast included Leslie Faber, Charles Kenyon and Isobel Elsom. A New York run in 1924 played at the 49th Street Theatre, produced by William Harris Jr. The cast included Lionel Atwill as Anton, Katharine Cornell as Lalage, Fernanda Eliscu as Madame Klost, Whitford Kane as Frederick and Pat Somerset as Basil. Dorothy Brandon
Dorothy Brandon was a British playwright active in the interwar years. Her greatest West End success was the 1923 medical drama '' The Outsider'' which was revived several times, and adapted into films on three occasions. An earlier hit was 1917's ''Wild Heather'' which ran at the Strand Theatre for 79 performances. It was also made into a film. Harold Huth
Harold Huth (20 January 1892 – 26 October 1967) was a British actor, film director and producer. Biography Early life He was born in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, in 1892. He was a nephew of Eva Moore and a cousin of the actor Roland Pertwee. For the first eighteen years of his professional life, Huth worked in the motor business. Actor Huth made his screen debut as an actor in the 1927 film '' One of the Best'', directed by T. Hayes Hunter at Gainsborough Pictures. He got the role in part due to the connections of Pertwee. Huth followed it up with the role of Captain Nolan in the film '' Balaclava'' about the Charge of the Light Brigade. ''The Outsider'' is a 1939 British drama film directed by Paul L. Stein and starring George Sanders, Mary Maguire and Barbara Blair. The screenplay concerns an osteopath who cures one of his patients with whom he has fallen in love. It is a remake of the 1931 film '' The Outsider'' and was based on the 1923 play of the same name by Dorothy Brandon. The film was shot at Elstree Studios with sets designed by the art director Cedric Dawe. Plot Anton Ragatzy is an infamous osteopath, known for his controversial methods of curing disability. Ragatzy uses a machine invented by himself which will either cure the patients permanently or will leave them disabled forever. A board of surgeons disagree with Ragatzy's methods and want to ban him from acting as an osteopath. Harry B. Lachman (June 29, 1886 – March 19, 1975) was an American artist, set designer, and film director. He was born in La Salle, Illinois on June 29, 1886. Lachman was educated at the University of Michigan before becoming a magazine and book illustrator, contributing 4 colour illustrations to the 1907 work ''John Smith, Gentleman Adventurer'' by Charles Harcourt Ainslie Forbes-Lindsay. In 1911, he emigrated to Paris where he earned a substantial reputation as a post impressionist painter and was awarded the Légion d'Honneur by the French government.
