''The Meadow'' is an 1875 painting by Alfred Sisley, now in section 88 (French Impressionist landscapes) in the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. It shows a scene near Louveciennes - Pierre-Auguste Renoir painted the same view of Louveciennes that year as '' Path Through Tall Herbs''.Colin B. Alfred Sisley
Alfred Sisley (; ; 30 October 1839 – 29 January 1899) was an Impressionist landscape painter who was born and spent most of his life in France, but retained British citizenship. He was the most consistent of the Impressionists in his dedication to painting landscape ''en plein air'' (i.e., outdoors). He deviated into figure painting only rarely and, unlike Renoir and Pissarro, he found that Impressionism fulfilled his artistic needs. Among his important works are a series of paintings of the River Thames, mostly around Hampton Court, executed in 1874, and landscapes depicting places in or near Moret-sur-Loing. The notable paintings of the Seine and its bridges in the former suburbs of Paris are like many of his landscapes, characterised by tranquillity, in pale shades of green, pink, purple, dusty blue and cream. Pierre-Auguste Renoir (; 25 February 1841 – 3 December 1919) was a French artist who was a leading painter in the development of the Impressionism, Impressionist style. As a celebrator of beauty and especially femininity, feminine sensuality, it has been said that "Renoir is the final representative of a tradition which runs directly from Peter Paul Rubens, Rubens to Antoine Watteau, Watteau." Armand Doria
Count Armand Doria (1824-1896) was a French aristocrat, art collector and patron. He served as the mayor of Orrouy from 1864 to 1896. He acquired a significant collection of impressionist works, including paintings subsequently exhibited in museums in Europe and the United States. Early life Count Armand-François-Paul des Friches Doria was born on April 24, 1824 in Paris, France. His father, Stanislas-Philippe-Henri Doria, was a marquis, which title his elder brother, Arthur, inherited. His paternal family was ennobled in 1539, during the ''ancien régime''. Count Doria grew up in the family castle in Cayeux-en-Santerre and a ''hôtel particulier'' on the '' rue de la Perle'' in Le Marais, Paris. Georges Petit (11 March 1856 – 12 May 1920) was a French art dealer, a key figure in the Paris art world and an important promoter and cultivator of Impressionist artists. Early career Petit was the son of François Petit, who founded the firm of art dealers at 7, rue Saint-Georges (Paris) in 1846. Within just a few years, the ''Galerie François Petit'' was among the most powerful firms in the French art market. According to Robert Jensen in his book ''Marketing Modernism in Fin-de-Siecle Europe'', the auction house assumed, "multiple roles that ran the gamut from certifying the authenticity of the object, to guiding it through the hazards of the marketplace, to establishing its provenance and enlisting critics and historians to situate the artist's importance." Paul Durand-Ruel (31 October 1831, Paris – 5 February 1922, Paris) was a French art dealer associated with the Impressionists and the Barbizon School. Being the first to support artists such as Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, he is known for his innovations in modernizing art markets, and is generally considered to be the most important art dealer of the 19th century. Ailsa Mellon Bruce (June 28, 1901 – August 25, 1969) was a prominent American socialite and philanthropist who established the Avalon Foundation. Early life Ailsa was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on June 28, 1901. She was the daughter of the banker and diplomat Andrew W. Mellon and Nora Mary (née McMullen) Mellon (1879–1937).
