The Lacemaker (Metsu)
''The Lace-Maker'' is an oil-on-canvas painting by the Dutch painter Gabriël Metsu, created ''c.'' 1663. It is an example of Dutch Golden Age painting and is part of the collection of Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, in Dresden. Description The woman is looking at the viewer and on her lap is a lace pillow for bobbin lace. This is one of the Metsu paintings with the longest provenance in any collection today, first recorded in 1722. It was documented by Hofstede de Groot in 1914, who wrote:79. THE LACE-MAKER. Sm. 112. In a room with an oil-painting on the grey wall, a lady is seated at work with a lace pillow on her lap. She wears a grey satin dress and a blue jacket trimmed with white fur. Oil painting is the process of painting with pigments with a medium of drying oil as the binder. It has been the most common technique for artistic painting on wood panel or canvas for several centuries, spreading from Europe to the rest of the world. The advantages of oil for painting images include "greater flexibility, richer and denser colour, the use of layers, and a wider range from light to dark". But the process is slower, especially when one layer of paint needs to be allowed to dry before another is applied. The oldest known oil paintings were created by Buddhist artists in Afghanistan and date back to the 7th century AD. The cat (''Felis catus'') is a domestic species of small carnivorous mammal. It is the only domesticated species in the family Felidae and is commonly referred to as the domestic cat or house cat to distinguish it from the wild members of the family. Cats are commonly kept as house pets but can also be farm cats or feral cats; the feral cat ranges freely and avoids human contact. Domestic cats are valued by humans for companionship and their ability to kill rodents. About 60 cat breeds are recognized by various cat registries.
