History The Crossroads Mall opened in Portage, Michigan, in 1980. At the time, it was the only two-level mall in Michigan outside Metro Detroit. JCPenney and Hudson's were the first two anchor stores, with Sears opening in 1982. Portage, Michigan
Portage is a city in Kalamazoo County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 46,292 in the 2010 census. It is the smaller of the two main cities included in the Kalamazoo-Portage Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has a population of 326,589 as of 2010. Portage is known for its Pharmaceutical manufacturing and celery agriculture. Maple Hill Pavilion (formerly Maple Hill Mall) is a strip mall serving the city of Kalamazoo, Michigan, United States. Maple Hill Mall became a " dead mall" after several years of decline and the loss of several major tenants. The center has since been re-developed as a strip mall called Maple Hill Pavilion which features DSW Shoe Warehouse, Hobby Lobby, Marshalls, PetSmart, Pier One Imports, Office Max, Rooms Today and Target as its anchor stores. Mervyn's was an American middle-scale department store chain based in Hayward, California, and founded by Mervin G. Morris (1920–2021). It carried national brands of clothing, footwear, bedding, furniture, jewelry, beauty products, electronics, and housewares. Many of the company's stores were opened in shopping malls; however, some locations were operated independently. Based on 2005 revenue, Mervyn's was the 83rd largest retailer in the United States. Hickory Farms, LLC is an American food gift retailer with headquarters in Chicago. Richard Ransom established the company in 1951 when he began selling handcrafted cheese at local fairs. By 1959, the company added summer sausage and opened its first retail store in Maumee, Ohio.
