The Connecticut Journal
''The Connecticut Journal'' was a newspaper published in New Haven, Connecticut from 1775 to 1835 by Thomas and Samuel Green as well as others. The paper had various names during its existence including the ''Connecticut Journal and Advertiser''. The publishers also printed pamphlets including sermons and the "criminal confession" written by David Daggett about Joseph Mountain, an African American man executed in New Haven before a crowd of thousands of spectators. It was sold amongst the crowd and was a popular and influential treatise. Thomas Green published several of Connecticut's earliest newspapers. New Haven, Connecticut
New Haven is a city in the U.S. state of Connecticut. It is located on New Haven Harbor on the northern shore of Long Island Sound in New Haven County, Connecticut and is part of the New York City metropolitan area. With a population of 134,023 as determined by the 2020 U.S. census, New Haven is the third largest city in Connecticut after Bridgeport and Stamford and the principal municipality of Greater New Haven, which had a total 2020 population of 864,835. New Haven was one of the first planned cities in the U.S. A year after its founding by English Puritans in 1638, eight streets were laid out in a four-by-four grid, creating the "Nine Square Plan". The central common block is the New Haven Green, a square at the center of Downtown New Haven. David Daggett
David Daggett (December 31, 1764 – April 12, 1851) was a U.S. senator, mayor of New Haven, Connecticut, Judge of the Connecticut Supreme Court of Errors, and a founder of the Yale Law School. He helped block plans for the first college for African Americans in the United States and presided over the conviction of a woman running a boarding school for African Americans in violation of Connecticut's recently passed Black Law. He judged African Americans not to be citizens and supported their colonization to Africa. Life He was born in Attleboro, Massachusetts, December 31, 1764, the son of Thomas Daggett. The history of Daggett's family in Massachusetts is a distinguished one. The original Daggett, John, came over from England with Winthrop's company, in 1630, and settled in Watertown. Joseph Mountain
Joseph Mountain (1758 – 1790) was an African American man who was executed publicly for rape and had an account of his purported "criminal confession" published. David Daggett published his "confession" in ''Sketches of the life of Joseph Mountain,: a Negro, who was executed at New-Haven, on the 20th day of October, 1790, for a rape, committed on the 26th day of May last''. Daggett was a founder of Yale Law School who served as mayor of New Haven, state representative, U.S. Senator, and judge on Connecticut's highest court. He denigrated African Americans, opposed educating them, led efforts to block plans for a college for African Americans in New Haven, and presided over the trial of a woman who was blocked from admitting an African American girl from her boarding school and then prosecuted for establishing a boarding school for African American girls in Canterbury, Connecticut Canterbury is a town in Windham County, Connecticut, United States. New Haven Register
The ''New Haven Register'' is a daily newspaper published in New Haven, Connecticut. It is owned by Hearst Communications. The Register's main office is located at 100 Gando Drive in New Haven. The ''Register'' was established about 1812 and is one of the oldest continuously published newspapers in the U.S. In the early 20th century it was bought by John Day Jackson. The Jackson family owned the ''Register,'' published weekday evenings and Saturday and Sunday mornings, and ''The Journal-Courier'', a morning weekday paper, until they were combined in 1987 into a seven-day morning ''Register.'' The Register covers 19 towns and cities within New Haven and Middlesex counties, including New Haven. The newspaper also had one reporter in Hartford, the state capital, who covered state politics, but as of March 2008 removed that reporter, leaving New Haven's major daily without day-to-day coverage of state offices and the General Assembly.
